A windy day on Puget Sound

The State of Washington (I lived in Puget Sound country for 40 years) has one of the largest passenger/vehicle ferry systems in the world. And sometimes it can get a little "lumpy". But the ferries keep running. These photos were taken at the Mukilteo Lighthouse Park on Oct. 18, 2007. Winds at 50+ mph. Shortly after these were taken, the loading capacity in vehicles was reduced by 1/2. "Issaquah" class ferries are 300 feet LOA, 78 feet beam, and displace 2477 tons unloaded. Ferry service is rarely shut down!

    Bear & dogs

The photographer was sure that he was going to see the end of his huskies when the polar bear materialized out of the blue....:( but the bear returned every night that week to play with the dogs ...:)

Imagine how the poor bloody huskies must have felt the first time the bear appeared - "please go away Mr Bear, husky's are not good to eat" is a rather politer version!

Yeah! absolutely love the bear and dog pictures. Reminds me of a wise saying...

Be a leader! Remember, the lead husky is the only one with a decent view...:p

Those guys we lucky to be found by the vigilance vessels. Yearly hundreds of them are not so lucky and perish in the 'cayucos run' from the coasts of Africa to the Canary islands. :(

(Second thought: Probably more than half of the people in that cayuco were already lost, as a cayuco that size usually transports more than twice the people in the image)

    Cool pix!

My experience with double ender ferries is in places like NY Harbor (Staten Island and Governor's Island ferries). The largest waves they see are tug wakes. Nice to see double ender ferries acting like "real" ships.

Guillermo so it's not an advert for whale bilge pumps then?

Incidentally if you look carefully there appears to be somebody to the right of the vessel with the onboard swimming pool who is either looking at the fish or has lost interest in the proceedings!!

"Of course this will happen with an electrician in control"

(Electricians are meant to ground things …)

    Mike,
I think the 'cayucos run' slaughter is not a matter to joke about. Men, women and children are dying by the hundreds every year.
    A human tragedy.
