I was wondering if somebody here could help me:

My steering system broke down recently. Now I could just replace the parts, but I'm really wondering if the wire in conduit syustem which was in place when I bought the boat in 2000 was original(The conduit forms 2 90degree angles which shouldn't be the case after the edson specs.). The boat was built in 1979. I sailed her from Trinidad/Carrebean to Thailand, crisscrossing the south pacific for 4 years and she was behaving very well...except the steering system.

So, does anyone know how she originally was steered:?:

    Freedom 40 steering

I own a 1981 Freedom 40 Cat-Ketch "Fantasy", and live aboard on San Francisco Bay. My vessel, hull # 60 came with hydraulic steering from the factory. At least that is what I was told. I'm not familiar with the system you describe.

I'd love to speak with you more about your cruise. How she handled, sail combinations etc.

By the way, Fantasy is an aft cockpit F-40.
