Double planking details

I'm looking for a typical cross-section of a vee-bottom, double planked hull without rabbeted planks......

 

IIRC, Pete Culler shows a few cross planked V bottom designs with details in his book Skiffs and Schooners and perhaps Chappelle does too.

 

Are you looking for Ashcroft planking or double diagonal?

 

I have a book called "V bottom boat building" By George Sucher I know it has some drawings in there I could scan and E-mail if you wish!

No, not double diagonal, just plain old double planking, but without rabbetts.

Perhaps I should elaborate... in one of my Westlawn lessons, I have to sketch construction details of various planking types. Most are given in the W/lawn text, but much of the detail in mine is illegible due to poor print reproduction.
So what I'm in need of is a typical section drawing showng the detail of the plank / frame / keel etc construction....

sorry I put you to all that trouble for nothing - should've explained myself better in the 1st place....

 

No prob.... Let dig in tonight and see what I can dig up! I'm pretty sure I have some section drawings to scan! Be on the lookout later this evening.

That's more like what I was after, thanks Gary. My knowledge of wooden boat building terms is a little lacking to say the least. In the image you posted, does the planking feature a rabbett where it's joined to the garboard? If so, how would this be done without the rabbett?

Most of my library is for small boats, I could only find reference to double planking in a few places. In all cases the planking was rabbet into the garboard as is shown above. Hopefully Dave F or one of other old timers can help out here.

Thanks Gary - I imagine the outer planks are simply butted up against the garboard in the same way as the inner ones are.....

 

Greetings, I have some experience with Alden Schooners circ. 1930. from various builders the practice was to have several strakes of full thickness garbord planks in the dead wood before starting the double planking. On one boat "High Tide" #456 built by MM Davis Gibson Island in 1931 there was white lead between the planks and no linen. There was no rabbet into the garboards. Inner planking was white cedar and back fastened into the outer mahogany layer.

 

Will, I dug through my stuff and Gary has the better of them. I have a nice section but it involves a centerboard trunk. I do have a drawing describing the elements of the keel rabbit or rebate Bearding, Mid, and rabbit line.

This is from an old WB, it shows the keel as an attachment to the double planking. But it is for the Cutts method, where a Kevlar cord is set in between the planks.
