    open source for boatExpress

    Hi Mark,
I know that that you have understood all the aspects of boatExpress.
There is in one of the thread an open source project. I wrote them to take their specs from boatexpress and go from there freely( no feedback).
If you want, opened an open source project yourself and I gave you all the rights to the source code, documentation, anything.I would answer any questions on how I did the algorithm etc. There are real nice one to calculate the stability curve for example or the VPP program.
I am building the 50' Azilda designed with boat express and all my energy goes to this task. You were closed to saying it and I may assured you that you have all the essentials to design and build a boat from boatExpress.
Would be happy if someone gave the energy to port it to Linux etc...
Thanks for the time taken to appreciate
    Gerard

    Hi Gerard,
Wow, I am excited. I would love to get the source code to see if I can understand. You keep the rights for now. I will first make sure that I have no conflict of interest with work. They can be funny about this stuff. Assuming that works out, I will get a project going, and see if there are any volunteers I can drum up. I will also start learning smalltalk to understand BoatExpress.

    I will start now....

    Hi Mark and Gerard,

Any news on the future of BoatExpress?

I've read the manual and looked at the demos and liked what I saw a lot!

However, after downloading, unpacking and adjusting the screen colors, I get the following when double-clicking the "V" icon:

Any help would be much appreciated!
    Best regards,

    Bert

    Bert,
Tell me which System you are running. On Windows XP , using the properties menu for the V file, under the compatibility label, you may specifies the 256 colors options but you must also select the window95 options.
I have just downloaded and testest the version and everything works fine.
Retry the download, a little bit could be lost in the download also.
Gave me feedback on your trial and I will help you to get this jewel shinning.

On the evolution of BoatExpress. First it is running properly on Windows for hundreds of users.
The construction of the Azilda will be completed next year( I will have more time for BoatExpress). Mark is supposed to be working on this open source project and told me that the language Squeak is the prime candidate he is studying at this time.
Development under this environment would permit the porting of BoatExpress on windows, mac os and linux.
I hope Mark will keep us inform on the status on his work and any help needed from my part.
For Dave Gerr Elements calculations, and for a one time calculation on a specific boat, any builder should go through his book and make his own calculation. This is not a long task and the book provide all the details for a proper understanding for the selection of lower or upper limit of the elements.
Dave could take a few students at the Westlawn School where he is on the Board and get them working on such a software project. Or these students should wake up and propose something similar to what you were proposing.
Hope to hear from both of you.
    Amicalement,
    Gerard

    Bonjour Gerard,

Un grand merci pour ta réponse!
I'm am running Linux normally, but for boat design I keep using a windows machine, with Windows 2K installed ( Windows 2000). So it was in that environment that I could not install BoatExpress. I think I followed your instructions for windows XP, but I'm not sure about that.(there were no instructions for w2K)

Good to hear you are planning to continue with BE! From what I understood, building such a software suite is a major undertaking, that can take many man-hour years. Hope Mark will be able to find some co-developers...

About Dave Gerr's book, it would be really great to get all of his formulas into a spreadsheet or other program. Perhaps it would be a good idea to start a new thread in this forum, to see if we can come up with such a solution. When finished, the spreadsheet could then be posted to the Library section.( Of course, we would need David Gerr's agreement first!) In my experience, some knowledge about the scantlings is needed already in the design stage. That's were a scantlings spreadsheet would be perfect, to quickly get a sufficiently realistic weight and weight distribution estimation. I made a spreadsheet of the wood construction part of Dave's book, but lost it due to a hard disk drive crash. The back-up on CD is read-only, so of little use.

Looking forward to hear more about BE! All the best for Azilda. She looks like she's gonna be something special, a tunnel hulled sailing yacht?:)

    Salutations amicales,
    Bert

    boatExpress on window2000 & Azilda

Sorry Bert, had no access to window2000 platform for testing.
Yes to many man-hour , over a 10 years period for part time development.
Win95 was the standard and Linux was beginning.
Azilda: 2 saildrives engines, water ballast, junk rig, lateral wing.
    A plus loin,
    Gerard
