V drives

    Can anyone advise me on the best V drive transmission to use for Volvo 250 hp engines.

    Just bought a 36 foot flybridge boat that had these engines installed but in a I/O configuration. The previous owner pulled these out and wanted to convert to outboards.

    I am going to re-install the engines but want to use V drives.

    Any help or suggestion will be appretiated. :- )

    I'm a more junior member here, and I'm sure that the more senior people will correct this if I'm wrong, but.......

    A v-drive is not a transmission. It's just a v-drive.

    I have an old Silverton that I'm restoring and coincidently we're removing the engine from this old girl this Saturday. SInce I've spent a lot of time these past few days around my engine I'd thought I'd weigh in here.

    Attached directly to the rear of my engine is a Borg-Warner Velvet Drive transmission. Attached to this transmission is a Walter Marine v-drive unit. Of course attached to that is the propeller shaft and so on.

    So I think you will find that you need both units, both of which work perfectly after 30+ years of service in my case, so I'd recommend either of these companies based on personal experience. There are of course different models based on size and power handling requirements.

    There are also V-drives with integrated gearbox and gearboxes where the input- and outgoing shafts are at the same side, even with 8 or 12 degrees angularity. Both are pretty expensive though, but so are two separate units.
