As a student of design, I'm interested in reviewing some of the older rating rules, e.g. "meter" boats, R-class, etc. Can anyone point me to website(s) that could get me started?

Buy the book (or check out if you can find one) "The Common Sense of Yacht Design" by L. Francis Herreshoff. D. N. Goodchild is producing re-prints of both volumes (combined) and it's cheap. If you find one of the original individual volumes, you'll want volume 11, chapter 13. This is a good place to start and get a good look at the rules before the universal rule begin its dominance at the turn of the 19 - 20th centuries. In fact buy all books and articles penned by this man.

I recommend "Yacht Rating" by Peter Johnson.
Complete over view of all rating rules since yacht racing started.
