ok i have a 1974 caravelle i bought and i took it out last weekend and it was running fine and now this weekend i took it out and we where pulling someone on a tube and for the first few hours it ran and pulled fine and out of no where when we where full throttle pulling someone in a straight away and it like kicked out of gear and the boat came to a stop and after a few mins of looking at it i noticed the prop wasnt turning when in gear, i tryed to reverse and it turns a little but hardly at all and at only high rpm.
I am a new boater and i have no idea why the prop would just stop out of no where. any thoughts

    its a 140hp mercury i belive.
im wondering what the problem is and how much it cost to fix this problem.

    thanks so much.

    Mercury outboard? or Mercriuser.

Any way it does'nt matter its quite likely a gear selector cable. Either broken or the end fittings have come off --or broken. Does the gear lever feel looser that normal.

If its not any of those then its an internal gearbox failure.

Maybe you simply spun the rubber hub of the prop. Cross your fingers and check it out first..simple..easy..cheap.

When a prop has spun on its internal rubber bush it does not fail to the point of not turning at all. Infact you probably wont know the difference until you try to get on the plane.

Under the rubber nose of the prop is a shear pin if thats broken it wont turn. Just another possibility... its happened to us.

Sorry August ice but shear pins generally change to rubber cush props over 20HP,-- and it will be an exhaust hub.
