John Pugh yacht designs

We're thinking of buying a 46ft John Pugh steel ketch...but can't find our any information about the designer or his designs. We're keen to hear any info on others' experiences w a John Pugh designed yacht...how it sails etc.

We are wanting to go bluewater cruising.

John Pugh

AJFlick, Johns plans were often sold through "Build-A-Boat" plan agency, they were located around Manly/Brookvale area from memory, my dad built one of his 36' Saraband cutter ketches- 30 years ago.It is a fantastic vessel & is still plying the port hacking - botany bay area several owners & many adventures later- Great Barrier Reef etc.Very capable sea boat, not too flash to windward with full bow but could be driven very hard off the wind with dad averaging 10 knots on one passage south from port stevens(east coast current assist).PM me for contact details, I am Sydney based.Regards from Jeff.

I have seen a lot of his designs built , they sail well enough even his early boxy designs. Similar in design to many earlier Roberts boats nothing radical and pretty safe as far as designs go.

I presume he is still in Sydney, he has always been very helpfull whenever I have contacted him for data. He also knows many of the vessels that have been built.

Sydney to Hobart yacht races, if it is? hes come a long way from Build-a-Boat.

 

Passionate response Eric the Red, I hope You've pointed at the right guy as theres a Jim & a John Pugh involved in the yacht design business & while you're at it why not elabourate on the issues so we can all learn? Don't just throw out the complaint with little expanation!. From Jeff.

 

Build-a-Boat

I remember buying a set of plans from Build-a Boat, I can't remember who the designer was. After looking at the plans in detail I never when ahead with construction. In my oponion the design was out of date, even though it was one of their newer designs in their books. I eventually bought a set of plans from Joe Adams and never looked back. I had the hull and deck constructed by a builder in steel. I had a good talk to the builder, he said at the time (1984) that Adams designs didnt have faults in the drawings and he had built yachts from Build-a-boat, Roberts and Adams. So it pays to talk to boat builders about designers before you go ahead.
At the moment I'm learning yacht design and the first yacht I design, I will be building it for myself, so that I can check that the plans are accurate. But before I start construction the plans will be lofted full size to check for inaccuracies.

 

I think you have the wrong Pugh, and it would be nice to see a bit more maturity in the composition of your posts.
