yes I finley got your pic's, looks like a nice boat? and yes i can see where your are talking about, is it really that bad? or is it just alittle worped? from the pic's I really cant see down the sides to see how worped it is? and if its only alittle I dont think it would make that much differance? I will agree its not right but??? would it be allright? to live with? Scott

    Early 1960's Red Fish...???

    Hi all,

My husband and I just bought our first boat it's a Red Fish of some kind. Hence the problem is we don't know what boat style it is. My closest guess is a 1963 16' Apache and it came with a 1964 75 hp Evinrude Starflite IV outboard motor. We can't seem to find any identifying numbers on it from the manifacture and the only thing we can find simply says "Red Fish" on both sides. I have read the info. about Red Fish going out of business in 1962and IMP taking over, which is why I'm so confused. Any help or info. on identifying our boat would be great!

    Thanks alot,
    LaSabrea

Hello all, I have not been up on this site for a while. I been locating parts for my 76 Aztec. Well I have the engine up and running again but now noticed that the right side bolts for the motor mounts are loose and don't tighten. I thought I had read somewhere on this site or on IMPboats.com about putting fiberglass into the bolt holes and reinserting the bolts again. Does this sound like a right fix??? Any advice would be great.

    Thanks,

JJ, thanks for the advice. Sounds logical to me as the boat is old and a major reinvention on the mounts is out of the question. I will give that a try and it should work just fine.

    Regards,

Hi All. Long time since I visited this site. Our '73 IMP Aztec is fully restored now and we've been busy fishing out of it. We started our project in '04 and called it complete early this year. Along the way we replaced all motor mounts, rebuilt the gas tank and resealed the cover, replaced the outdrive collar, replaced the tilt motor, serviced outdrive (fortunately no problems there), reupholstered seats and sides, recarpeted the deck, added a Bimini, a trolling motor, installed a bow seat and a fighting chair over the gas tank, added a depth guage/fish finder, a cd player and speakers, a Marine radio and buffed and polished the hull. All told we're into the boat for ten grand now, including purchase price. Major problem areas were the gas tank (filled with water and aluminum tank was pitted), motor mounts were all dry rotted out (took out the engine and rebuilt the deck), tilt motor (still having problems there), and rebuilding the front seats. Boat runs like a charm and we're really happy with it. This is my second IMP. Other one was a '68 IMP I purchased in '72 and it was cherry. I'm interested in the boat club too. I'll try to send some pix of the finished product. Don't have any of the restoration progress. Best of luck to you all.

Hi Karl. We had the same problem on our '73 Aztec and we ended up taking out the engine and rebuilding the deck itself. No quick fixes here. We cut out all the rotten wood and replaced it with treated 2x4's (important to keep new rot away) then fiberglassed over that. Completed the task with a coating material you buy at at Marine shop which required some sanding, but the end result is a like-new look and solid mounts. If you want detailed information on material used and man-hours involved email me at nadaboring@cox.net and I'll have my partner (who did the work) respond to you. I've got pix of our finished boat posted on the site below your original posting. Best,

    John

Hi LaSabrea. The information you read about the Red Fish is pretty accurate and complete. For more info you might want to log on and join www.IMPBoatClub.com and post your request there. It seems a lot of the guys who used to post on this site have gone over there. The boat you have probably falls in the class of a collector's item. Don't expect to find parts or a lot of information. However, before you go to the ImpBoatClub, read all the posts in this forum and you'll find a lot of information about Red Fish. Good luck.

    67 IMP Comanche

I bought this boat a little over a year ago in Phx, it now lives in Marina Del Rey. We had a lot of bugs to get out of the system (there are probably a couple more to be found) but what a treat it is to cruise around the harbor!
Here is a photo taken a few weeks ago, there was a classic yacht show in Marina Del Rey and they also had some classic cars. I parked the boat and then looked up to see another surprise!

Your boat is a beauty. Quite a classy lady. Would that you had the convertible in the background to pull it with, eh? Did you do the paint job or is that how it looked when you purchased it? You are right that it looks like an Apache - it might be the first photo of a Red Fish that I've seen. I'm sure you turn some heads as you cruise through the harbor. Thanks for sharing. Best regards and calm waters.

Just looked at your boat again and I have a question. Was this boat sitting in a strip mall lot on Indian School Road near 48th Street with a for sale sign on it? If so, I looked at that boat myself.

It is the same boat that you looked at. I was visiting family in Phoenix and made a U-Turn when I saw this one for sale. The owner said that it was in running condition (it was after a few $$$$). Anyway, I have been working on it for over a year and have it pretty close to done. This winter we'll replace the floor (wood rot) but everything else seems original. As far as I know this is the original color. Apparently it spent 9 years in a garage which really helped the paint.
