Cutting plans vs. kits

If a person buys the cut files legitimatly from the designer and does not build the vessel then what would be wrong with selling the cut file?

If you do not use them, thats probably OK, but the designer should be notified, and the new builder should be able to talk to the designer when questions arise.

Cutting files have a royalty built into them to allow ONE boat only to be built (unless you have of course paid for more than one). There is also copyright by the person who owns the design (probably the designer). You will probably also find, although super difficult to stop or discover, that there is a clause actually stating that the files are not allowed to be re - sold under any circumstances.

Well, the Bransonboats kits seem to be very good quality/esthetics/price ratio - perhaps best in this particular boat segment.
Too bad I'm not into the Barge/trawler segment.

Since you added a Schooner aren't you considering a 30-60ft sail cat range in the future as well? Is it even feasible in steel or aluminium only? Thanks

 

Just to answer the original question.

I would probartly buy the design and not the kit.
I would like to have the abilety to do some chenges myself befour the cutting. Mayve you like to change the engine grider to fitt bether to the engine and gearbox you chose. There is allways something you want to change to your own preference.

Having kits shipped over long distances is also probartly more expensive than having it cutt by the nabour.

Is it a big market for kits?

 

We are specialised in cutting files and kits developed from drawings supplied by the client. We 3D model the vessel and then develop the plating sections and other components. If you would like a customised boat we make whatever changes you like prior to developing the plates.
With cutting files / kits you save many labor, rent and consume about 25% less plate as wastage is reduced to a minimum. Since the hull and deck plating is digitally rendered and lofted the final result is superior to a hand lofted boat.

I love all boats but unfortunately Catamarans are outside my range of experience! But for sure catamarans in aluminium and steel in certain applications are a good thing. Cats are available as DXF files/kits from designers and if plans are available they can be computer modeled and a kit produced.
