Am restoring 1959 steel gaff cutter built in Holland. She never had insulation, notwithstanding having sailed to as far away as Norway and the West Indies. The interior steel is in excellent condition and only pitting was underneath heads.

Am wary of spray on foam, also unobtainable here. But the yacht I work on which is also steel has rock wool and with 5 crew and 8 guests condensation does not seem to be a prob, but the rock wool does get wet.

The alternatives are something like neoprene or cork. There existed paints with a high % of cork granules and seemingly worked well against condensation.

Has anybody used any of the above or owns boats which have?

Owens Corning makes a product for basement walls that might be useful. It has an r-11 rating, can be removed for inspection, the exterior is a matt fabric, with a channel at the bottom for wiring. Being made for sub grade applications it should handle marine applications also. Try www.owenscorning.com then go to basement finishing.
