hemi 454

    allright, i just picked up a trashy old boat im lookin to restore, im not sure wat kind it is all i kno that its about 1985-1995 and its a runabout lol. i wanna drop a 454 hemi big block into it and i wanna kno how much work is required, i didnt find too much info on this, i just wanna kno how you would put the stern onto it, how much work it takes to marinize this engine (i read up a little on that however) and overall, can i supercharge that baby?

    The 454 is a General Motors engine, the Hemi (426 CID and others) is a Chrysler product.

    Ultimately, you can toss enough cash at most any problem and get it resolved. Most of us don't have this luxury, so we live humbly with our tunnel ram, twin 4 barrel, 350's.

    The title for the boat should tell you what it is. If no title, then the "HIN", found on the upper right hard corner of the transom, will lead you to the manufacture, which can be looked up through the USCG.

    Most small boats have limits. Weight, minimum and maximum horsepower, hull shape restrictions, structure and tankage limitations, etc. that will govern how much motor you can play with.

    Find out what you have (make, year and model), this will determine how much you'll have to fool with. Then calculate a budget, because a sweet 6:71, sitting on top of a Chevy big block isn't cheap or easy to keep operating in a boat.

    Get rid of it and buy yourself a working boat. It will be alot less expensive and will allow you to gradually get familar with boats.

    lol b20zfrank is just a shorter way for sayin b20zfrankenstien (or a crv-tec lol), hm well i got access to all kinds of equipment and engine resources, im just curious wat i have to work with, like the idea of a 454 is pretty exciting for me... but chances r im just gunna get a mercruiser engine, im more so curious about wat it will take rather then worried about cost, im just thinkin an engine between 200 and 300 hp with a thru hull exhaust system, the interior im not the least worried about, so its only really the engine, and the mounts for it, any ideas on how a car engine mount in a boat would work?

    p.s. sorry bout tha hemi typo, im more of a vtec guy haha

    oh and the boat i got is a 18ft silverline runabout :) lol

    Tom,

    If I had an 18' inboard boat to "restore" , I would diffentely be using a small Blk. Best and cheapest way is to find a "junk" mercruiser or better yet, PCM and use the marine stuff - Exhaust, cooling, and mounts. Don't try to use automotive mounts since thy can't handle Thrust Loads. Also be sure to use a Marine Carb, alternator and Starter for safety. Also,Stay with High Torque cams.
