As far as quality/durability of the mono hull macreggor and similar boats is not important, its the hull speed.

The upper cap could be redesigned taller and user friendly to accomodate more berths etc. Hull length would be increased, sails, mast and all the sailing equipment would be gone as you suggested.

As far as the ballast, even when filled its only a couple knots slower. Basicaly the vessel could be technicaly over 5000lbs and still reach hull speeds of 20mph with a 35kw electric motor or 50ish hp diesel or even gas engine.

The design would not take heavy seas to well either but similar hull designs have sailed from continent to continent.

The main aspect is the hull design of the macgreegor and similar hulls meet this thread topic, there is no need for a cat nor tri hull or any new creative hull design.

I believe the 26x and the 26m is the hull you should focus on. If i remember right both are very close in design, the "M" has a slightly more V hull. Both hulls i think need to be taller though. One problem is the whole boat tends to bobble a lot when sitting making it a bit uncomfortable. It may bobble less if a longer hull or maybe more?. Id like to see a hull atleast 30ft with the slim under 8ft beam as the macreggor.

I moored next to a 26x and it bobbled like a cork in the 1ft swells compared to my 26 power cabin cruiser. But then again he uses 5x less fuel and 5 times the range, kinda nice when fuel is $3.50 a gal. here in Ca. I cant even afford to take out my 26 power cuiser as it eats up $200 in gas running a few hours.

    Mc gregor

I have looked into the Mac Gregor website and was enthousiast as well, though have read the 'cork' like behaviour as well, which might also be due to the low weight of the vessel. If you would use a wavepiercing bow, also to 'update' the design a bit, you might loose some of this when cruising. Also, weight of the batteries and engine could be nice and low, and maybe two stability fins/strips to each hull side would make it a bit more comfortable. Will you use the lines a drawn on their website for a basis Doppson ?
