TAMD40 replacement

    i have twin Volvo TAMD40 engines (165 hp) on a 1983 Henriques Brothers Maine Coaster 35’ 4”. I want to replace the engines in her. Any suggestions on what to replace them with?

    is this a heavy boat? is it a semi disp or what?
    I would look at the 4 cyl cummins B series rates 80 -230 bhp
    can you tell us more abt the boat and what speeds you achieved with Volvo?

    Its displacement is 21,000 lbs. LOA is 35' 4". beam is 13' and draft is 43". At 2400 rpm she only makes about 12 kts max. anything over that it overheats. A engineer from volvo came and couldnt resolve the problema couple years back. Black smoke out of the port engine and white out of the starboard.

    An engineer from Volvo came and could not resolve the problema couple years back.

    I trust you did not pay the invoice.

    Are you serious? You pay for a repair that is manifestly unsuccessful and you did not demand restitution. Hell's teeth, as an Englishman I could do no less than be wearing his testicles on a leather thong around my neck.

    If this character really had been an engineer from Volvo he wold have been Swedish and would have understood the concept of blood money. The old rules still stand over here. There can be no saying "Sorry, I'm bleeding useless as an engineer."
    Rather, it's "Help, I'm bleeding to death, because my customer cut my nuts off."

    That aside, I think you should rename your boat "Blood Eagle" and seek out this engineer and give him a second chance, whilst explaining the reason for the name change.

    white smoke either air, or sometimes a stuffed piston
    Look whip you oil filter off, cut it in half with a hacksaw open up the paper and what you see is the INSIDE of your engine. Bright allumium piston material, copper bearing material if all good, ok
    Did he do a turbo boost test? cos sound like no boost on the balck smoke engine?
    Now if you want to change your motors and buy me a plane fair:)) just
    kidding
    you really need a qualified man there and it sounds like you have not had one!! Before you dump those motors,
    One do a checks, like compression check
    boost pressure check
    for the over heat,
    check , first your raw water pump.

    we have already checked the impellers and are cleaning the water tubes through the engine tomorrow. they were both chipped up pretty bad, but we have good water flow out the back. both engines were rebuilt in 2002. They just really suck and underpowered.

    i also noticed the engines seem to skip. almost like gears are not latching. it only does this when the current is head on.

    KPKILLER, I also own a 1983 35 Maine Coaster. She is powered by a 318 h.p.
    Tamd63l. (single) Cruise speed is 15 knots. Max speed 19 knots. I would recommend light weight engines in the 215 h.p. range. I would like to ask a few questions about your boat. Email me at dkolb1@sbcglobal.net if you are interested.

    We cleaned the water tubes and it still overheats at the same rpm. Im also gonna clean out the fuel system since they are old engines. Any other hints on what might make it overheat that fast?

    one eng? you may have a leaky head gasket seeing as you say the theremostats are ok

    At what rpm?

    At what engine speed does it begin to overheat?

    If it happens at or near max throttle, you are likely overpropped. What is the max rated rpm on your engines? What is your actual max at WOT?

    If you can't reach max engine rpm, I'd say it's a prop problem.

    Were the props reworked when the engines were rebuilt?

    What is the gear ratio?

    What is the dia. and pitch on your props?

    this boat is old
    with all due respect a boat prop is like a truck gear ratio, if a truck lugs at full load full stall it does not overheat, providing all else is ok, cooling etc

    A overpitched prop, which stops the boat reaching full governed speed , will notcause the engines to overheat, it will just smoke and use lots of fuel
    by the way what is high idleon the engines? (high idle) is full throttle no load, is outta gear
