antifoul paint.

Interesting topic I thought about toxic substances being available. I bought a kilo of TBT a month ago for the pupose of mixing into my antifoul paint on the next haul out.

The man that sold it too me had a shop that did not look too disimalar from Frankenstiens laboratory. He sold ANYTHING. We call him the 'Acid man"

He even has a hunch back--lovelly old guy.

About 5% to a gallon is what we normaly use --I say we,-- as just about every one here boosts their antifouling.

The reason I bring this up is that when I dived on the boat 3 months ago I felt very ill and in the middle of the night I dried up and lost ballance, I thought I was going to die --seriously.

I talked to a diver who cleans boats regulary. I asked if he felt ill cleaning boat bottoms-- he said "oh yeah why do you think I charge so much"?

I am hauling out next week, I shall be using only 2.5% this time. I believe this was the normal amount.

Strangley if you try to put more than 10%--and some have tried,-- the paint wont roll,-- it goes glutinous.

I know this will be met with outrage, but the anti foulings on the market today is useless. The last job I did lasted 6 months, and its not cheap is it?

TBT is now no longer used it is blamed for ( as the Thias put it,-- the fish cant have babies).

I believe TBT can be mixed into pourus paint like red lead to make an adequate antifouling but I have not tried this.

proves one thing Jack! TBT should be used 'cos it kills pests! I always thought you put the paint on out of the water - obviously using that underwater paint there - sounds like good stuff!

But seriously mate go careful with that sh** if your swimming around the bottom of the bo-at! can't have 'ee topping yersel can us? nobody to extract the ****** from then!!:(

No no no this is normal out of the water paint!!

Never seen underwater paint --are you kidding?

The thing is we yachties always get bashed first,-- the ships who can afford it can carry on using TBT.

The strange excuse for this is that they dont --often -- come in to land and consiquentlt has less effect on the environment.

This seems to me to totally ignore the size of the ships and the amount of paint they use in comparison to a small yacht.

I mean they buy the stuff in tons.

I've heard a similer story about useing "Roundup" a name brand of weed killer. Guess it's similer to what your talking about.. Yeah it's tempting but just 'cos other people are slobs and litter does that mean you should? Probably does immesurable harm, my conscience could not allow me to do that.

    Weed killer contains TBT.

I have to say your absalutely right but what else can you do when legislation has become so severe that the product you buy doesnt do the job.

Jotun replaced its TBT range with a product called seaqueen. This product was introduced as the new wonderfull environmental freindly antifoul 1 year later it was abandoned as it was not good. They replaced that with seaforce it comes as 30-60-90. I have just ordered this and I hope to get more than 6 months.

All manufacturers are in the same boat---pun inteneded.

My boat was anti-fouled about 9months ago now..Environment of course has a lot to do with it as well. My hull is no longer "clean" but so far what is there I can brush off when I float around the boat in my dinghy.
What are the options for anti-foul paints? I think alum-grip does one and I've seen ads for another one caller "copper" (something or other).
I believe the search is still on for a paint that is not anti anything but just creates as urface nothing can hold onto.

Yes there is a copper paint called 'copper bot' this has also been called 'copper coat" Some kind of copy right infingment or something.

This is basically a copper powder in a water soluble epoxy binder.

If it fouls you clean it and wipe it with some sand paper 180's or the like. bringing fresh copper to the surface.

This is not new,-- copper sheathing was adopted by the Royal navy many years ago 1700 something I think. Any way the sheathing was to stop the dorado worm but it was found that it stoped fouling too.

Before that they used to carine the boat and light a fire under the hull to burn off the barnacles.

Some say that this was the reason the bounty was burnt on Pitcairn Island and was not deliberatley set fire to as the movie suggests.

Ive seen pages on the web where people have made thier own just by mixing copper powder in thier own choice of binder.

Actually when you buy that copper coat it comes seperate and you have to mix the copper powder in your self.

It's as expensive as hell, really needs expert application (well somebody who can read, if he can get hold of the instructions) and is just not for the haulout tide to tide job, takes time - but having said that it is good (apparantly)

TBT I believe is now banned as an antifoul in the UK (Walrus will correct me if I'm wrong) But results in the Scottish Highland sea lochs where TBT was favoured in the late 80's for 'Farmed fish cages' showed a wide variety of sea-life 'freaking out'. Infertility on one hand - while dog-whelks (a sea molusc) grew *****' of enviable length.

I just bought this stuff yesterday

Jotun seaforce 90 25-50% Dicopper oxide
    10-25% xylene
    10-25 % Zinc oxide
    2.5-10% Colophony
    0-1% solvent naphtha light arom
    1-2.5% 1 methoxyl 2 propenol
    2.5-10% Ethylbenzene

That means absalutely nothing to me but this is supposed to be Jotuns latest ( mid range) stuff for suitable for 60 months protection.

On the tin it says,---May cause long term adverse effects in the aquatic envioronment.

This is a sad thread to me.

Not judging anyone, but it pretty much sums up man-kinds footprint on Mother Nature...No?

    Hi All
This is an interesting topic. I read in a local boating mag. a short while back of someone mixing Cayeene Pepper with a regular long lasting bottom paint with amazing results. The sea life doen't like the spicy flavor and it is environmently friendly. Just think if everyone used this the fish in the ocean would come out prespiced.
