Splashing a mold from an existing hull

A friend of mine has a set of sport fisher plans, 38ft I think is was. This boat was in production for a number of years but for whatever reason stopped. He wants to build a mold for this from an existing hull. If not a full blown mold, something that would take the shape of the hull that can be used as a plug for someone who knows how to make molds.

Besides finding an existing hull, and making sure the hull was in perfect shape, does anyone have an idea how to create some type of plug from a hull? What material? How possible this would be?? Some type of rubber product that can be sprayed and will harden slightly? I really am not sure...

Just FYI - Before anyone says how wrong it is, my friend legally owns the designs. Purchased, paid for, and owned outright. This would be a legal venture. He is just looking for a way to save time and money instead of having a new mold built.

you are saying you want to make a temporary mold from a hull, then a plug from that, then a production mold from that and then produce hulls. It would be a lot easier to make a production mold directly from a properly prepared hull that allready exists.

Do you want to only make one boat and only need a mold that will last for one boat, or do you want to make a bunch of boats and need a mold that can be used numerous times? Sam

 

He is looking to go back into production so he needs a real mold that will be used for many hulls. Im not sure the best way here but making a real mold from a hull seems like a good idea. Im just not sure how to?

Perhaps your friend should hire someone who knows how to do this.

 

Question what is wrong with going out and building your own design instead of coping someone’s hard work?

COPING is what we do when (insert fibreglass story here). sometimes we do it well ,,

 

I know but if one buys the design then logic would dictate the original molds would be included right as the selling of design rights makes them worthless.

I have a design, the designer faded away and I want to proceed. Do we go ahead and wait till he pops out of the weeds or do we give him credit all along and set up a royalty escrow fund?

although I did buy a set of molds for a 23 pickle fork that were a splash of a splash of a splash. Didnt build the boat and sold them to a guy in Miami. The only trouble I ever had was for a console mold: even after we modified it, split it and used it on a closed deck 33.
