Just in case you were wondering here is one of the raceboats previously campaigned. Recently ran 187 mph w/3600 HP

 

If you are a flats boat fisherman, this is right up your alley. The lobster boat type, while slower, can handle very rough weather. Also, the fuel consumption is much lower. That kitty will get you there in a hurry, though. That is, if your dentures stay on

 

Its rough water capabilities are actually very good having been proven in Open Class offshore racing with the exact same hull with a different deck. Fuel consumption should aslo be better because of the reduced drag of the cat design.

Apples and oranges, Sean. Fuel consumption and seaworthiness are functions of the performance envelope of the vessel. The cat will be a dream running light at 60 mph in 2-ft chop, but a dog while trolling heavily loaded at 5 mph in 6-ft seas. Similarly, the lobsterboat has performance advantages and disadvantages in different conditions. I applaud your advocacy of the cat - they are great boats within their niche. But to say that a cat is the panacea for all ills is a bit like extolling the virtues of a Camaro as the ideal car for everything from racing on main street to hauling crushed rock home from the quarry.

Granted, cats have been give short shift over the years, but they do have their limitations, too.

In Canada you can also drive the Camaro over a frozen lake and fish out the window . I agree that the two boats are very different. In marginal conditions I prefer the lobster boat. High speed boats have little floatation reserve forward. They are fine at planing speeds, but once slowed down will act like a submarine.

 

Thnaks for the input.....I realize they have advantages and disadvantages alike. Maybe I could haul crushed rock with them someday . Never used a Camaro to ice fish with but did have a big selection of dark houses while growing up in Minnesota. Also we used to log across frozen lakes in the winter and trucked across the frozen lakes in the winter.

 

Expensive, gas hog, great SKA boat!
