Boat design for US market - rules?

We are about to proceed with 8m power boat design for US market. Should we follow ABYC or some other standards? Is the CD/book they sell in ABYS full set of standards required? Thanks!

 

Yes, the CD contains the entire standards collection, updated annually in July. You will also need to meet USCG regulations, Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations, Subchapter O, parts 151, 155, and 159, and Subchapter S, parts 173, 175, 177, 179, 181, and 183. These Title 33 regulations can be downloaded free from the USCG Website at: http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_04/33cfrv2_04.html.

The ABYC used to sell a book of all these pertinent Federal regulations, so you may want to ask about that, too.

The cost is approx 1000USD for the first year and then 500USD/year.

 

I believe if you meet all the ABYC rules, you should be fine with the Coast Guard. You will find our rules to be much simpler than ISO or some of the various classification society rules, such as RINA. One thing to remember though, we don't use metric here, so make sure you spec in US sized fittings and hardware. Good luck!
