I am looking to purchase building plans for a 37' to 45' aluminum sailing catamaran.

I am having difficulties locating any sailing aluminum catamaran plans and I would appreciate if any body can give me any leads on finding some plans or some experienced designers.

If I can not find any genuine aluminum cat plan, I am also thinking about a hard chine plywood to aluminum plan conversion. I have already located two plywood catamaran plans that could be converted to aluminum but both designers have already published statement that they do not favor aluminum as a building material for their unit.

Basically, my customer has his mind set on an aluminum construction. With the plans I will be able to give him a cost analysis of building in aluminum, building in Cored composites and purchasing a used unit.

did you find drawings for aluminium hulls

    Mr Le Blanc

Noting that your discussion took place some time ago - I am eager to find out, if you actually did build the aluminium hulls. I am myself looking into building af 45ft multihull (have not yet decided whether it will be tri or cat...) and will be in need of drawings for the project.. If any suggestions for supplier - I will be happy to receive.

    Regards

    Peter

In Thailand there are a couple of aluminum cats, they were designed by a guy called Munnery? or something like that. If you can't get any joy there then in Australia there is a designer called Peter Kerr who designs and builds nice looking alloy cats. Buy Multihull World mag or go to their website and look for Lizard yachts or Peter Kerr designs.

Mark Pescott in Thailand would be able to tell you about the alloy cats in Thailand.

    cheers

    Hi Peter,

I am sad to have to report that the catamaran building project has been postpone indefinitely

When I was seeking fir an aluminium catamaran plan, I was working as a consultant in naval architecture and one of my clients was seriously interested by an aluminium cruising catamaran.

At that time, I had access to many aluminium building shops in my region and I started to do a feasibility study for this customer.

In the mean time, I joined a major Naval Architecture consultant firm in the Montreal area and I decided to stop all of my ongoing projects.

In general, most peoples will agree that an aluminium catamaran becomes interesting in a length over 50ft. If the boat is shorter than 50ft, there is a weight penalty and a cost penalty.

After searching, I found out that there are almost no plans available for aluminium catamaran shorter than 45ft so the project of my customer had a rough start.

However, I did find three plans that were very interesting:

Boden Catrina 11: a 11m (36ft) cruising catamaran made of steel or aluminium.

The Boden Catrima 11 is a trawler type… other would call it a Condomaran. It packs a lot of space in a fairly compact boat. I think that this will not be a very fast boat however; this was an interesting design that would be fairly easy to build that that would fit the needs of my customer.

Spider Web a 40ft open deck catamaran by R. Harris

The Spider Web was a semi-custom plan for a 40ft open deck catamaran. I think that it will be the easiest and fastest boat to build and it will have very good performances. This is an interesting design because I started to design an almost identical boat last year so you can understand that I stand behind the design choices made by R. Harris on this project.

Galileo 41 A 41 ft Bridgedeck cruising catamaran.

The Galileo 41 is much more of a boat than the other two. The boat is much bigger and the design is more complete. It represents the state of the art design by a French catamaran designer.
However, I am not certain that my customer would have the financial resources to choose this design over the two other designs.

I really like these three designs and I would consider building any of them for my personal needs in about 10 years but at the moment, I am leaning towards a 32ft weekender catamaran build in foam composite. I purchased the P95 catamaran building plans from K-Design last years and I am reviewing the plans and working on the costing and I am hoping to start the construction next year.

    Hi Phil,

    Thank you for the leads.

Unfortunately, the project has been put on hold but I appreciate the leads and I will try to research them

François Lucas is a French Naval Architect that has designed at least two Aluminium Cats, with plans for amateur construction. The "Cateiko"and the "Okéanos 42".

    Give it a look:
