displacement resin infusion

    How did you make the set of molds with an even (2.5mm ) space between them? Sam

    We applied 2.5mm 'thickness wax' (sometimes called calibration wax) to the male mould, then laid the two part female mould up on to that. Then, when you demould and remove the wax, you've got your precise 2.5mm cavity.

    I don't want to answer for cristofa's method, but sheet wax is what's commonly used to get an even gap between the two molds.

    Resin Infusion

    Hey guys, the industry calls it "match die molding" , male mold, female mold with space in the middle for resin/glass. All factory Corvette parts were/are made using this process. Most hiway tractors (Peterbilt/Mack/White) have cabs built using the process as well. Most times, glass fibers are sprayed into/onto a mold using a chopper gun-like cutter (no resin) and a binder/glue is sprayed on to hold the dry fibers in shape. This piece is called a pre-form, resin is then added into the mold in a predetermined amnt and the molds pressed together to "squeeze out" the resin and wet the glass reinforcement.

    'Matched die molding' A guy down the road from me 25 years ago was using the method to make aircraft parts, I believe he had some other technical sounding name for it. Almost 40 years ago I had a job running a heated press that had a couple metal 'matched dies'. A hard fiber pellet about the size of a hockey puck would be put in, the press closed for 15 seconds or so and when it was opened there was a thing like a large salad bowl that I would stencil 'Remove Before Firing' onto.     They build water tanks (two piece) with that system in the ME.

    cristofa mentioned of using wax.but wax are not adviced for polymer composites. so it is better to use the wheat paste of high viscocity, u can use this by applying the paste in particular points on the mold which may give u a clear idea abt the thickness

    I'm sorry, I don't understand your point. To create a mould cavity of known thickness, wax sheet works equally well with polyester or epoxy gelcoat. When you have laid your matched mould on to the wax and separarted the 2 parts of the mould, the wax can be removed to leave a mould cavity the same thickness as the wax - how can you use wheat paste to achieve this? Or are you using the wheat paste to verify the size of the cavity ... we use plasticine for that.

    Chris,

    Its rather old technolgy and has been around for a very long time. Weights or presses have been replaced with vacuum.

    I thought rocat was manufactured using a semi RIFT/RTM-lite combination production method?

    cristofa, You might enjoy reading 'Heart of Glass' by Dan Spurr. I was struck by how many 'modern' high techniques actually originated in the very early days of FRP manufacture.

    Most were driven by a lack of room temperature curing resins. When these became available, together with the invention of the chopper gun, all the high tech methods went into hibernation as it was so cost effective to shoot cack into an open mold. Only the need for higher performance lamainates and the restriction on VOC emmissions seems to have triggered this renaisance in high tech methods.
