We have a 1996 Crownline with a 4.3LX Mercruiser Alpha One. Put a new crate motor in last summer with an aluminum intake. Last night, when it is put in gear, there is a whining noise, like a supercharger sound, although I know that isn't it. Pulled plug on bottom of lower unit and metal shavings came out in the oil. We smelled the 90 wt. last night but saw no leaks, prop was not hot and it moves in forward and reverse. Any thoughts on what this could be??? Thanks for responses

you got metal, so strip and see whats happening. sounds like bearings but you will be able to overhaul the whole unit while it is out.

It might have spun a bearing in the housing too. You need to take it apart to see. However, an aftermarket sterndrive with a three year warranty is cheaper than buying the parts to rebuild your own unit.

obviously with the shavings you have drive problems.....

however, another thing to check is the gymbal bearing......grease it

Are you running your drive in full tilt position? Shoud'nt do that!!

Gymbal bearings are expensive, if its rusted greasing wont do anything. Buy a new one from a bearing supplies,-- thats where Merc get them from.

Merc dont make bearings,-- half the price at least.

I never hear any whining in my Alpha1.

When I bring my mistress along.

You see this is the basic difference when they're stuck with an Alpha, fantasizing about my Bravo . . .

    Look Charlie...

It could be your sub-conscience whining about how much this repair is going to cost you.

That sucks Tom, because now a whole new arena of possibilities is opened up and I'm not prepared for the prospect, that I've subliminally talked myself in or out of stuff.
