Hi All, I originally wanted to make a traditional wooden runabout boat 18 foot. But I’ve done a bit of a backflip and was wondering if I could use the same hull shape using aluminium as the hull? My reason for changing to aluminium is because it’s more durable and is less maintenance. I would also like to use a outboard instead of the inboard that’s in the original wooden boat plans. I realise these are pretty serious design changes but am wondering if this is a really bad idea and what I should expect or change??

    Thanks Darren M

Among several other things you need to take into account the difference in total weihgt.
Also constructive solutions in aluminium are totally differents that wooden ones.

When you say “traditional wooden boat” do you mean plank on frame? Or some sort of stitch and glue plywood/epoxy hull? If the latter then switching to plate aluminum is certainly a possibility, though it will require rethinking structural reinforcement, as well as the points that TANSL made.

Switching from inboard to outboard introduces an entirely new set of complexities - trim, transom, keel shape... Why not just find a suitable design in aluminum and save yourself all the hassle? There are certainly lots of 18’ plans out there. And evaluate your assumptions regarding durability. Will aluminum really be more durable for your application? It comes with its own set of issues. Are you a competent aluminum welder?

A plywood, planing hull ? What plans are you referring to, with the inboard engine ?
