    Hi,

my hybrid diesel-electric boat (Volvo Penta 18hp in // with a Perm PMG 132 5kW) is equipped with 260Ah of 48V Pb batteries.

I am considering upgrading to the same capacity of LifeYPO4 and a new controller in order to gain approx 130kg and better performance (higher Amps, higher pure electric speed).

I am looking at 2 possible controllers (Kelly PM48401B or Piktronik PD3/G) which both support PM motors and regeneration (in Diesel mode the electric motor acts as a generator to charge the batteries).

My understanding is that in regeneration the controller produces a variable DC tension depending on the rotation speed of the diesel.
Should the BMS manage that variable tension to cap it to the charge tension (in that case would you recommend any BMS ?) or am I missing one additional component ?

    Thanks!
    Arnaud

Quick update: I completed the upgrade, using 16 Winston 200ah cells in series, the 3kw 58.4V TC charger, and the RT-BMS provided by ev-power.eu.

lots of space and weight saved, but cost some $$$. Anyway, very happy with the move. Still have to install the BMS to manage the cell balancing when charging. (I only tested some 20% discharge so far)

I got my answer: charging voltage during regen is managed by the motor controller. In my case I had a very kind upgrade to a lithium software form Bellmann (Netherlands) for a reasonable fee, and a great help.
