Sponsoons for a trawler

    Could sponsoons be used on a trawler and be attached to a rub rail to reduce roll and to serve as a safety system. I envision the sponsoons to be out of the water until the boat heeled ?? and then hopefully reducing roll

    I think you would get a jerky motion and slapping if they were above water, it would be better if they stayed in the water and not too bouyant, you would probably have a softer ride with the traditional fish. Anything you do is going to cost you speed and fuel.

    First off all, you have to calculate and decide how much reserved buoyancy you might get and would it be justifiable. Secondly, you have to know how much weight these sponsons contribute to the overall weight, and thus shift in KG and overhang that might affect the whole ship stability, it might make your boat wobbly. And finally, with plenty of these things hanging beside your boat would it affect the operational and aesthetic.

    And yes i think it would have been a rough sailing

    Sounds like you need "flopper stoppers" these can be home built, or purchased .
