A privateer was NOT a pirate. Privateers were contractor naval forces.

If we had modern privateers, pirates would be out of business quick.

    Nah ...

He just has a twisted view out his poop deck .... If we could get him on a catamaran or trimaran, his view would not change every time the ocean rolled .... under his moorings.

The only thing which distinguished privateering from piracy is that formers were protected by the Letter of marque issued by one of belligerent governments. The rest was equal. The prey was robbed and the loot was distributed among the private ship owners, officers and crew. The privateering was driven by economic interests of involved parties, not by patriotic feelings. In fact, many privateers had returned to piracy after the war was over.

Basically, it is like you going down the street and get beaten, shot and finally robbed by an armed gang. It helps you little to know whether they had or not a letter of marque, it essentially remains an armed robbery.

And in fact privateering is now forbidden by national and international laws, just like piracy is.

When privateers were in their heyday regular navies operated in much the same way, except the loot was distributed between the admiral, captain, officers and men according to an admiralty formula. Captives were held for ransom of exchange.

Someone paid attention during history class ...

Maybe we could re-invent "to the shores of Tripoli." And put a stop to the pirates.

Of course, there is a building boom and housing price bubble, because the pirates don't have any other investments, they over price their building economy.

The US navy didn't play any significant role in either war with England, privateers or not. In fact, there wasn't a US Navy in the revolution, unless you count the continental navy's 7 cruisers and few dozen scows with cannons on them and the occasional merchant ship, that beat up on an English warship. In fact the continental navy was reduced to 2 ships, taking on the largest navy in the world at the time. The US Navy's first real warships didn't appear until 15 years after the revolution.
