I have a 2005 rodman 38 with TAD volvo engines which smoke. because of the position of the exhausts the smoke catches the side draft and swirls back up onto the stern which makes the transom black with staining. i have had the engines checked by 3 differnet engineers and one suggessted moving the exhaust positions. Has anyone come across this as it is ruining my boating.

    Hi Mark,

It doesn't sound right to me that a 3-year-old Volvo is smoking so badly as to stain the hull and annoy the crew.... especially after three mechanics have checked it. Moving the exhausts sounds to me like a way to hide a more involved problem. (Although, if exhaust is coming into the cockpit, perhaps they are in the wrong place....)

Are they smoking at idle, at full speed, or over the whole speed range? What's the exhaust temperature like? How many hours on the motors?

I'm not a diesel expert. But there are others on here who are, and may be able to narrow down the possibilities given some more information. I would think that severe smoking on these relatively new engines is indicative of either a loading problem (wrong props) or something wrong with the engines themselves.

Matt thanks for your reply, it is a problem, the engines have done 430 hours and are regulary serviced. I have just had the tappetts checked and although the gaps where well out the adjustment has made no difference. A trip of maybe half an hour will blacken the stern. I have had the turbos checked, as to the filters changed and just had her lifted out and hull checked. All in all the people looking after my boat are telling me that these engines do smoke although i dont see any other boats in the marina with such problems. She smokes on start up even though i use her every week, she then smokes and polutes the cockpit until on the plane and then you can see the smoke whilst on the plane skimming the water surface and swirling back onto the transon.

I have throw a load of money at this in a vain attempt to solve it and havent as yet.

    Hi Mark,

From what I understood, the engines model could be the TAMD63P, right? In 2005 the R-38 could be equipped with the KAMD300 and D6-370 amongst others (Yanmar). Why did you choose the 63´s? My opinion is that its just an exhaust position problem. 63's, as they are not electronics, are more smoky than succesors, as D6. If the shipyard is installing engines and exhaust systems in a more or less standard installation, its possible that they didnt care so much about the exhausts. New engine range are really less smoky than precedents, so TAMD63P. what about engine rpm? Can you easily reach the 2800? When does the smoke appears, at idle, medium, full, anytime?
