    Ok so the poop tank is 316 SS they (as in the client) didn’t want an inspection port. What can I say my tank is plastic with one? Some people just don’t listen, ah landlubber I am seldom “told “my son but thanks for the great sage advises even if it was un solicited. I am not an expert in fact I am quite proud of being a backyard hack, unpretentious and willing to experiment, but then I never need the extra head room if you catch my drift. Michael what is that strange thing you have taken the trouble to show me and I hope you washed your hands…Cheers John

    They are suction intakes or level sensors for blackwater tanks

    Reverse engineering x180

    My reverse engineering thread which i thought was dead and gone into history has been revised but taken a 180 approach. In the mouth out the rectum down the toilet and into the tank, the only thing reverse about that is backing the body into the heads to be seated. :)Yup from all indications stainless while at one time recommended has proven not ideal for this use. I have to admit while i have never used stainless for my holding tanks(plastic) I was not aware of the problems with it, until this forum. However as John (Scunthorp) has said the customer is always right, you can't tell a Heinz pickle nothin. Good info,--Geo.

    The welds will corrode with stainless...very fast...SS needs oxygen. Black water is anerobic.

    Hmmm some of the naval vessels I have worked on have Black water tanks made of steel which have lasted (on one vessel for over 50 years). The macerators were a bit of a bugger always getting clogged up and the pipes required an acid wash every couple of years. This tank was for a 36 ft sail trainer which if ever run hard might have a total crew of 8 for a couple of days. The latter vessel had a crew of 250 for every day of the year. Kind if makes you think Ah???

    The real flaw by the USA standards was that it did not have a level indicating 3/4 full as stipulated by current construction and fabrication requirements. I informed "them" of this fact also. I am surprised no one caught it though being so super keen and all. Is that the same in Europe? (The requirment I mean)

    Re the above post John, Since this is reverse engineering, primarly building the poor mans super strong yacht, wonder what they did with their lifeboats? Just kidding boys, once thru that thread is enought although from the posts i've learned, when one does so he ends up the perfect sailer, broke, divorsed, single, an excellent scrounger and barterer which develops his bull and story telling attributes,(attracting young maidens), a good part time worker of no fixed address, and to boot the frustrations of the economics of building and the result on his social life has taught him how drink as a proper sailer should. And you guys say reverse engineering is a fools errand, who's the teacher and whos the student here. Now if i wasn't almost 70yrs. old my new conversion could create a whole new life for me, well it could maybe for 1 day after a successful story(you figure it out).
    Speaking of my new build/conversion it is progressing slowely and as soon as i,m into the keel work i will be posting detail photos from the beginning of the project( i have kept a good record) Meanwhile i will start new threads once and awhile to gather information associated with the project with the last being the African mahogony info. and i really appreciate all your input. Also thanks to Hoytedow, learning some computer skills. Geo.

    Did some dirty work on my hull grinding out the old stuff I don’t need. I have finally got rid of most of the foam and bigger bits of stuff I don’t need. I am removing some of the flange but keeping most of it to tie in the deck. Hope this inspires the less industrious amongst us. Cheers John

    Lifeboat to pocket motorsailer conversion myself, the owner and his friend did about 4 yrs, ago. During my many boat projects i was always welcomed the sweat equity of the people involved. I know this is not always desired or possible as production schedules have to be kept,wavers have to be signed, but in small one or two man shops when all goes well it's just such a pleasure. Geo.

    In the US at least, ss gasoline fuel tanks are limited to 20 gallons and must be cylindrical with domed ends. It has to do with welding changing the properties of the metal and leaving it prone to developing flexural cracks along the welds. Not saying your tanks won't work but FYI, those are some rules about ss tanks.

    SamSam...these tanks he built are for black water.......he will soon understand why he was advised against this, but went ahead anyhow.......I have pulled many of them from old, and not so old boats, so speak from experience, not religion.

    I cleaned 26 gals of ripe sewage from my bilge when my 316 ss tank decided to take a dump. New tank is thick glass and epoxy.

    Keep cool John, you are now paying for your customers demands. They are never, never going to let you away with it. I think Landlubber has fired two broadsides into you, AAAHHHH that must sting. No respect for a fellow commonwealther. Can you hit his blackwater tank with the big 50cal you used in Afganie, file an X in the tip that should make a real mess. :) Make note Battan has experience cleaning up s--t, pass his number on to your customer.:) No real reason for this post other than stirring up poop so to say, Cheers everybody _._(da de da) Geo.
