    Where is the modern technology??

    Modern worm-drive angle gearboxes, variable-speed variable-torque programmable AC drives, multi-KVA level inverters - it's all cheap as chips now. We can program that winch to limit weight on that sheet with a few options in a menu.

    Just a simple snatch block is $US200. I can buy a three-phase motor and worm gearbox for that money..

    I don't get it. Why are we still doing this the old way?

    Probably because, among other reasons, there are still some boats that work in the "old way".

    We just finished making up blocks for our boat - all rope stropped. Old technology with modern materials (dyneema rope, delrin sheaves).... but we can fix them anywhere. Not the same as the equipment you mention. I think that's the reason.
