I was thinking of purchasing one of those Peninsular marine diesel engine with stern drive sets. Has any one used this maker before?

Is it cost effective than Volvo or Mercrusier?

    GM/Detroit 6.5 vs Cummins 6BT?

Only reason to choose GM over the Cummins is space-there is no other reason why.
    None.

GM 6.5 diesel with a cast crank
might survive as a NA engine but doughtful with a turbo
How come Peninsular havn't moved on to the 6.6?

These are auto based engines , so they must be operated like auto gas engines.

Full throttle to get up on the plane then a good pull back to much lower rpm for cruise.

If you need rated HP or a very high percentage of rated HP, an industrial based engine will have a far better service life..

The 6.2 and 6.5 were designed to be light duty diesel engines for the GM 1/2 ton trucks. I have had a turbo'd 6.5 in a 26' planning boat for 13 years now and have had good service. This is the same engine that is in the military Humvee and still is since 1984. I removed a Ford 351 windsor from my boat and installed the 6.5 and gained performance and fuel econonmy. In a previous thread I posted one of the DOD service manual for these engines.
These engines are like any other diesel engine in the fact that they will last if you take care of them and know how to use them.
Warm them up, cool them down, change oil, clean fuel, don't over rev, and don't overload.

except who makes a high speed diesel with a cast crank..thats a very short list
Saying that the crank usually breaks because the block main webs fail as its about as strong as a small block gas engine.
Clearly thousands of them survive but a broken crank in a 6.5 is no surprise to anyone.
