I played a bit with epoxy at home (had a broken cupboard, the screwed destroyed the wood around it .... so got a nice piece of wood filled it with epoxy and jammed it in the space. Left it to cure then screwed the cupboard back ...)

A friend of mine who owns a tourism company is talking me into building a Canoe for him as a part of a campaign to promote tourism in Egypt (for river trips) and document the whole process as a part of a bigger campaign. He has a place and we will see how we can raise the money.
Ill probably go for a simple S&G canoe or strip planked version .. what ever is easier
Hopefully we will get things rolling and should be a more affordable way to start my dream ...

I attached some pics of the wood i used for binding with epoxy, really cheap wood i found lying around but i wanted to get the feel of it and i have to say i love the stuff !!

I attached the data sheet for the epoxy im using .....

Unfortunately due to money, the only wood i can afford is birch ply (Finland plywood) got some samples prepared for boiling test to see how well it handles.
Its the only thing i can afford so even if its low grad ill have to use it for the canoe.

 

The only filler available is fine Silica, which i hope would be enough for bonding again i will try to get some samples to test.

Started gathering some basic tools for work. Still need almost everything though so ill git it bit by bit ..
Was playing with the idea of building a model first using normal plywood till things get more organized we shall see ....

 

Fine Silica samples should be ready by tomorrow will try to pick it up and see if i can get the local epoxy to peanut butter consistency for bonding. If that works well then the next step i some trials with birch plywood ...

 

I've been down the Egyptian Nile a few times. I wouldn't actually mind paddling the whole thing (Aswan to Med) expedition style. What kind of boat are you planning to build? I would recommend a big voyageur style canoe that can pack a lot of gear and seat about 10 to 15 people. You'll need all the cranking power you can get while paddling up wind on the Nile (wind always blowing south).

 

The initial boat is going to be something along the 14' PETERBOROUGH from salway.
I am not sure how different stitch and tape is to stitch and glue but thats the shape / size we are looking at for a prototype.

My friends company does toursim and the plan is to have a fleet of kayaks for trips up and down the nile - expedition style.
