I am looking for the most efficient way to take paper plans and build a 3d model from them. I have done the "trace line drawing" route but now have the option of using a table of offsets as well. So, my question is... I have lines drawings and a very detailed table of offsets. what is your prefered method from this point. i am using rhino 5 and would purchase a plugin if there is a chance to streamline the events. I would also like to know if anyone has had luck building an excel template to enter offsets and used a point cloud to start. thanks

I have developed a program that reads data from an Excel table to draw the lines drawing, 3D, in AutoCAD. The problem is that the program, called ARQN, only works is Spanish. But if you send me the data I can see how to use them and return a 3D model of wires.

That would be great but my table of offsets is on paper. If i could send a pdf of the offsets that would be great but if i need to enter it all into an excel table then i would only be one step closer to doing it all myself anyway. i would love to see your program, is it an excel template. i dont mind having to translate.
    thanks for your reply

The most practical thing for you is to send me the pdf table of offset and I'll see what I can do.
Note, however, that having the table of offsets in Excel is just the first step of several other steps that must be taken.
Do you have AutoCAD?. What format do you need for the final 3D model file?
    Regards

I do have autocad and also rhino. I guess a 3dm file would be best as they are supported by both and my end result will need to be in rhino. I will get you a pdf today. I sure do appreciate your help. Is this something you have been able to make a very time efficient task.
    Thanks again for the help

I have an Excel spreadsheets for entering offsets in feet-inch-eighths and feet-inch-thirty seconds and outputting a point file which is simple to read into Rhino. Typical time to type the offsets into the spreadsheet is twenty minutes to one hour. Send me a note and I'll send it to you.

Steps I use to go from offsets to a hull surface in Rhino:

    1) Use the Excel spreadsheet to create a point file and import the point file into Rhino.
    2) Create sheer, station, waterline, buttock, keel/rabbet, etc curves through the appropriate points.
    3) Correct and adjust the points until the curves are sufficiently fair.
    4) Use the curves to create a hull surface. There are several methods to do this and the one I use depends on the shape of the hull and how fair the surface needs to be.
    5) Do final fairing on the hull surface.

Chops, begins with DCockey, who can do the job directly in Rhinos and if there is any problem, I'll try to do it.

Chops, try this worksheet. It is ready for AutoCAD 2013-2014 and dimensions are in mm. AutoCAD must be running before using the spreadsheet. I hope that works.
