It will be interesting to see what evolves. Glad he chose a sailing yacht.

But then regardless, why is it that these people have to choose such gigantic ships,...certainly limits their true usefulness.

Very big motor yachts are almost a 'dime a dozen' now, so something like Black Pearl will stand out, and be uniquely different to the 'masses' (?)

 

On another forum there was reference made to a 45 minute long vide0 on Black Pearl. What surprised me the most was there was absolutely NO mention of Maltese Falcon,...the real original dynarig sailing yacht that introduced most of the technologies that Black Pearl utilizes. There was the fellow who took the big leap on unproven technologies. ( I wonder where she is now?)

I often wonder how much really good down time an owner of one of these HUGE yachts gets. It would seem to me there is too much crew/support staff involved with such a huge yacht that the owner would not enjoy it as much as if he had a smaller yacht he could handle himself.

Sure would be nice to find someone with his wealth (or considerable less) that might be willing to build this dynarig project,..

I like your Dynarig cat proposal Brian - that would be a much more sensible (in terms of how much 'bang for your buck' that you get) yacht than something like Maltese Falcon or Black Pearl.
But she would not have the same amount of pose value.... and that seems to be what matters.

 

That word 'pose value' is a new one for me, but I think it refers to bragging rights?

I seem to recall that Tom Perkins (the owner of Maltese Falcon) had something to say about this 'mine is bigger' subject. Don't recall the exact nature of his quote ( or maybe it was a book he wrote?). Old age is bad for the memory banks.

 

I think that pose value could be described as a kind of bragging rights.

Tom Perkins had very distinctive and unique yachts - not the biggest, but certainly classy and stylish.

I don't have a problem with Bezos building a superyacht, but with his money shared even a little bit; that could be several superyachts. Okay, more than a few.

Bezos is not "posing" as a man of incredible wealth, he is one ! And to think that "conspicuous consumption" was once regarded as socially retrograde.

Frankly, this is really egotistical. All he would need to do to prevent having to dismantle the bridge is, not install the mast and rigging. Sub contract it to a yard downstream or elsewhere. Another article on this quoted a figure of 20 million USD, which he says he will pay.
