I'm being talked into low-rent Houseboat living in Sacromento, CA delta

I was giving away a bunch of excess household stuff and the guy is saying he is living on a houseboat in a "shut down" marina, but they still have electric power, just need to bring water and have sewage pumped.

Some talk about a non-moving houseboat boat I could get for under a $1000.

Haven't seen it yet.

Any tips?

Sounds fishy, but the guy says the marina has been "shut down" for 3+ years and has a manager who is "accepting people".

Sounds like it would be worth a look and even if the houseboat turns into a total loss if it lasts for 3 months it would be a "winner" if nothing else just for the experience. Guy says its really "wide open", shooting, hunting, fishing, etc.

 

There's always the possibility that you become responsible for environmental damages and end up paying large wads of money to dispose of the boat, which can get into the hazardous waste/toxic category.

 

Without knowing why the marina was shut down it's hard to even contemplate a comment. If it was just financial issues, a property in receivership sorta thing, would probably be the best (it doesn't have to be for environmental issues). The concern then, of course, is that the manager is simply a caretaker out for some extra scratch on the side and his tenants are really squatters.

Mind you, being a squatter may actually give you more rights than a tenant in some places in this crazy world....
