How far out is classed as the ocean?

On-topic then: It rather depends in what context, and in which country. If, say, the insurers have an "ocean"-category, it might be something like "5 miles from land", which means you can be on the ocean in a big lake. It seems the french and spanish authorities have some weird rules about that.

Further, if you're one of those geologists working on oil-rigs, then the definition would be very different.

My definition (in danish, that is), is that you have to be on the "real oceans", otherwise you're simply "at sea". To confuse a bit, there's nothing hindering being at sea on an ocean. Just as you can be up the creek without a paddle in the middle of the pacific?

Ducks are only suitable for coastal waters. You never see a duck on the ocean.

If a vessel is not allowed on the ocean, then it should be operated in bodies of water where ducks are found.

Only humans can reason, that is why we are superior to ducks.

 

Are there clear definitions for the EU classes (A, B, C) regarding distance offshore? I've seen sea states and significant wave heights mentioned, but not distance. Perhaps it is unclear intentionally, as is often the case in the USA. This allows enforcers to excercise their own judgement.

Nope, Jack - It's an ordinary danish (male) duck found all over the place here.

P.S. I didn't take the picture – what is great about that blue/green colour these male ducks have is that it changes with lighting. The blue isn't actually blue, it's green, but the shape og the feathers/cells makes them look blue, depending on angle and light if that makes sense? "diffraction" I think it's called?

And Lowell - You're right football in the US is stupid. More breaks than play.

I don't think there are clear definitions on those classes, but I could be wrong (again).

Jack - the brown one with the ducklings is a she, the one with the green/blue mask is a he. That's how you tell them apart - and the beak, of course. The beak of the male is yellow/orange, and the female's is black/brown.

About football: I never watched a game of it, be it the american or the european one. One is stupider than the other (at least to watch).

And personally, I don't have any ducks. I live in a flat with a huge cat so a duck would be pretty short-lived.

Ducks make such a mess of your bow thruster when they get sucked through it. Your cleaning feathers and crap for days. I think they are a hazard to marine navigation and should be shot and cooked or sent to Disneyland. LOL

An ocean is a principal component of the Hydrosphere. Geologically, an ocean is an area of oceanic crust covered by water. Oceanic crust is the thin layer of solidified volcanic basalt that covers the Earth's mantle where there are no continents. From this point of view, there are three oceans today: the World Ocean, the Caspian and the Black Seas, the latter two of which were formed by the collision of Cimmeria with Laurasia. The Mediterranean Sea is very nearly a discrete ocean, being connected to the World Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar, and indeed several times over the last few million years movement of the African continent has closed the strait off entirely. The Black Sea is connected to the Mediterranean through the Bosporus, but this is in effect a natural canal cut through continental rock some 7,000 years ago, rather than a piece of oceanic sea floor like the Strait of Gibraltar.
