    Hi All

My son has a recent interest in rowing, having had a taster week in Sculling.

A Tandem Scull design would limit us to quiet rivers and flat calm lake days.....so I looked for something with speed but more sea-keeping.

I think CLC-Boats (John Harris) Annapolis Tandem Wherry, 19'10" by 38" beam is best compromise and balance between speed, stability and sea-keeping so we can take her to lakes and coastal waters and not be limited if weather is bad.

Built a Selway Fisher Prospector 15 a few years ago, great as a canoe, but slow, we want some muscle building rowing now my rugby days are over.....

The CLC Tandem Wherry is beautiful but has very low freeboard and isn't a good idea for any sort of waves. The Wayland Marine doubles, especially the Merry Sea 2, are much more seaworthy (and faster) and still very light. Or you could build a Ken Basset Firefly 2 and put decks on it-

If speed isn't a worry than the CLC dory with sliding rigs is very capable too.

Here is a chap that did a major refit on a Merry Wherry and has rowed to Iceland from Scotland.

Definitely an individual that doesn't require much in the way of creature comforts.

Annapolis Wherry is nice, downside is low freeboard, not really suitable for rough conditions at all (its still a nice boat though)

Long, narrow rowboat with a bit more freeboard would probably suit, there is a thread somewhere, called designing a fast rowboat, some nice ones on that

    some other links

(a bit beamy,,, but freeboard and length look good)

scilly gig from bateau.com (nice,, maybe just a fraction short?)

wineglass wherry from pygmy boats (maybe again a fraction too short)

(I like this one,,, add buoyancy tanks fore and aft, raise freeboard by 2cm or so,, perfect)
