The imperial conversion for beam is incorrect in the article, it's actually 9'10 BoA (typo probably as noted elsewhere).

The "Dibley Designed—ROBINSON 5000" is a 16' tri with a beam just shy of 10'.

Sounds a lot like a slightly scaled up Weta.

    Quick look differences include

    • A single square top main on a stayed mast
    • Beams that pivot with the amas swinging back and in
    • Foils and rudders are ama mounted
    • The boat is designed for main hull flying

The last 2 items above provides an easier path to foil assist/full foiling.

This seems to be part of the plan.

Doug is sure to follow this one. We can be sure he will be disappointed if the boat does to make a transition to a foiling soon.

I also see the foiling potential. However, I am willing to admit that it may meet all of their needs/desires without foiling and/or it is ok if it takes a while to get around to any foiling attempt.

Then again, If it does come together as a single hander tri that is competitive with 16' beach cats, the almost 10' beam does seem to beg for a try at foiling.

I also see this layout as having potential for easier single crew righting after a capsize than is possible for a typical cat. Turtle to mast horizontal can be made easier with either single ama flooding, or possibly even swinging one ama in up against the main hull.

Update from Kevin with his permission to publish:

    Hi Doug,

All going well though owner/client wanted some modifications with Ama volumes as he now wants to lift main hull.

I’ve drawn that up and Richard Edlin, the builder, is in the process of doing that now.

We also added a small jib and moved mast aft a little to provide more horsepower and excitement.....

The team are also looking at using a 3D Carbon Printer to make some of the smaller items.... Busy, busy, busy

I have to say though, the first sea-trials were ALOT of fun!

More in a couple of months.

    Cheers

    Kevin

I think its pretty cool the owner wants to fly the main hull and is willing to do whatever it takes.
