    not to thread jack, but I remember hearing about how cable pulled fairly small(100ft), high frequency (low time between trips for passenger convenience) high-speed (30+kts) ferry service COULD work, except that the small boats can't handle the chop, and the passengers can't handle the boat not handling the chop. maybe hydrofoils pulled by land-based big electric high speed winches could work.
