    From Scuttlebutt Europe-neat boat:

    Canoe sailing with a difference - the Swedish D class Tejst . . .

The scandavians have a long history of canoe sailing. These take many forms and differ from the extreme International 10 sqm Canoe that we know in the UK. The canoe type featured here is a Swedish D class Tejst (Black Guillemot) design by Torsten Sörvik. With precisely the canoe character; a long, narrow and lightweight hull with the buoyancy aft and absence of a marked planing threshold.

Length is 6 meters and beam 1.5 meters with a weight of 380Kg and interior ballast of 180kg, sail area in main and jib is 13 sqm (139 sq ft). The interior is 150kg ballast in the form of lead ingots and a center console has laminated lead ingots of 30kg, approximately 0.85 m below the waterline.

Overall, this gives a hull that is marked 'initial stiff' and feels stable even at a slight angle. This is well something you usually do not associate with sailing canoes. To help, it also has "krängbrädorna" short sitting out boards. These project 400mm from the side of the hull and has a hoist that angles them upward when you do not sit on them to prevent drag.

Bengt Joern Manor wrote after he test sailed Tejst for SAILING magazine: "She is alert and responsive, is controlled by fingertip. With a man on board is the weight about 450 pounds, yet it is dinghy feeling overall. The feeling of security also, paradoxically." Cost is around £27,000 . . .

”I happen to know several sailors who do not like night sailing, having done too much of it already. They do not like the hardships of ocean racing in a sport that is supposed to be a pleasure....What they want is to sail in the daytime in pleasant weather and sail fast enought to get the sensation of sailing. The only thing that will satiate the desire of these men is the sailing machine, and they should be allowed to have it.” - L. Francis Herreshoff, The Common Sense of Yacht Design

    D Class Canoe

This is a very expensive boat but appears to be excellent quality. One of the neat things I noticed was the pivoting carbon seat that extends the crew CG to windward. Might be applicable to other dinghy/keelboat designs:

In order to facilitate sailing, canoes were fitted with krängbrädor.
D-and E-canoe the krängbrädor allowed to protrude 40 cm outside the hull if the hull is at maximum width. Our krängbrädor are made of carbon fiber laminate. On the E-canoe it is movable lengthwise so that the hull is going to tune with body weight.
