The plans are somewhere, if not on an external reference, they are in the mind, and they must include precisely defined measurements, or it just ain't gonna happen. Unless you are making dug-out canoes, and even then it might include the hip-width template to ensure you can sit inside the thing !

I can see that many here don't have experience in this field. However, many successful boats have been built like this throughout the centuries. All the original Carolina Sportfishermen were built like that. Saveiros in Brasil are also built from the mind to the lumber. It is necessary to visualize the whole boat and the successive building steps. A fair amount of experience on the type is crucial too. Plans are a relative new invention. They process using them is very different.

Do these "eye" builders use measuring tapes ? If yes, they must be referring to a memorized, albeit possibly simple, "plan". If not, I am dumbfounded !

You are very right. You see?, when you're right, I admit.
Do not think I insulted anyone when I say that the quality, if you are working without planes, is very low and I would not trust someone who built without plans. What I said is that working without plans in Republic or in Milwaukee, the quality will be very poor.

Show an example of this quality you say is low and let's compare it to some of the disasters built with plans.

I'm sorry but I do not believe that any Sunny Briggs vessels were built without plans, but with just a rough sketch of a profile. I can believe that a client may have said "I'd like it to look something like this sketch", but Sunny Briggs would have then got his plans out & altered them to suit the new commission, which was hull 14, the Laura T.

There had to be plans Gonzo, however much you protest otherwise.

    Over & out. ;)

With apologies to the Haitian builders, this "no plans" stuff sounds like voodoo boat-building.

But, what are you talking about ?. I have not to show any quality or any disaster. In any case you will have to convince us, if you will, that you, working without plans, you get enough quality.
I leave this discussion because me, with no planes, do not know how to argue.

Why is that? I have met illiterate shipwrights that built high quality boats.

Literacy and basic math were hammered in so hard in 1st grade that I immediately felt it an insult to say someone was incapable of reading plans. I don't know anyone even in my parents' generation who can't read. I honestly don't know anyone who mentally couldn't learn to read who could build a boat. A friend of mine suffered badly with dyslexia in school. He worked harder all through school. Thinking about it some more, I remember my grandparents telling a story about someone who never learned to read. That memory is so distant to me it's hard for me to imagine.
