Books for ocean passages etc..

Hello,

I am planning Meditirenian and Atlantic passage from Turkey to Carabbian. And if i can, to USA and come back to Turkey.

Of course, I need to buy some charts and publications for it.

As charts, i am planning to buy an Ipad and install e-charts of Navionics into it. IPad will be also my second GPS onboard.
Do you have any recommendations about pilot books and do you also suggest paper charts too? As i know Rod Heikell has pilot books about meditiranian, i dont know anything about Carabian Waters pilot books.. BUt if you sum it up they cost a lot. But of course i want to buy the necessary ones..

For planning the journey and having some global information i looked at Cornell publications. He has two books "world cruising routes" and "world cruising destinations". And recently they published two books "world voyage planner" and "Cornell's Ocean Atlas". Considering my tight budget, i dont want to buy all these books. Intiutivelly i think to buy worls voyage planner and Cornell Atlas and maybe world cruising destinations.
Which ones do you recommend?

to use sailmail you need a special modem and it is expensive and i dont have space on board.
Instead, satalite phones are better i guess

I would not sail without paper charts. Electronics, specially cheap ones like an Ipad are not reliable. To start with you can't see it in the sun. Also, if it gets submerged in salt water, which will happen, the Ipad will be junk. Try this website for cheap prints of charts. The paper is thinner than the USPO or Admiralty, but they are serviceable.

I find that a combination of digital and paper cartography is best. The electric charts are cheap so you can carry a vast inventory. Ive got full folios of Transas, Imray and Navionics electronic charts . Imray are raster scan images of Admirality charts, pretty good. The paper charts are eye watering expensive so as a result your paper folio is small and only a strategic backup. As a paper backup for inshore water I like to use the pilot books. Not so expensive. One probelm with all the Ipad chart navigator programs is that they dont have a distance run log. Perhaps the GPS is unreliable because of Ipad battery life.

I have not tried the AIS app for Ipad. AIS is a very good navigation tool, dont leave home without it. You should investigate.

Im always amazed that charts in the US are free. With all this budget deficit problem you would think someone would wake up and start charging for US cartography.

 

I am thinking exactly the same like Micheal. Will have e-charts and some paper charts as an emercency backup.

Gonzo, I couldn't find any cheap paper chart print in the web page you recommended. Which of them are supposed to be cheap?

 

Cheap paper charts are local and produced by private companies or privatley scanned and put on the internet.
