AIT was set up to break the record from Serge Testa. He sailed around the world in a 12 foot monohull.
It was thought to compare apples with apples so no multihulls where allowed, just monohulls.
Like Angel says....one can allways make up his/her own rules.......as there is no AIT organisation.
No doubt that when a 10 ft cat would sail around the world there will be comment about the fact that Testa did it in a monohull.......same goes for an "alternative" approach of what "sailing around the world" means. Circumnavigate Antarctica is enough or does one need to cross the Equator....once or twice.....

I liked Ant Stewart's approach. Don't break an old record. Set a new record.

His boat didn't qualify as an open boat by one persons definition because it didn't have garboards like a Drascombe Lugger, but rather than add garboards, he went his way.

I think it's the best to do it for yourself anyway, and not to proof something to the world, so in this regard everyone's own rules would be fine for him/herself, no matter what the world thinks or says about it.

... and he's a great one. Very supporting, and even comes up with great ideas of his own. His latest idea is for me to design or modify a boat to sail around the world, or wherever, on he least amount of money possible. Somehow this just suits me. He knows me so well.

From the Yrvind thread, post #488:
The trophy picture was posted by Gilbert van Meel from Antwerp, Belgium on Duck Works Magazine in an article about his boat Skippy. I don't know Gilbert and couldn't find contact info on the web, so my advice would be track him down and ask him if he can answer the questions . .

I like the trophy and I do like Gilbert's motto: ‘‘ It’s better to fail than not to try ’’ - [IMG]

P.S. - I've made an attachment of the trophy picture, instead of hotlinking, so picture will stay with the thread.

Thanks for the information. That is a better quality photo than the one I posted, and yes, it looks real. Now if we can track down Gilbert, and he hasn't joined the p0rn stars at http://www.aroundinten.com ... ;-)

I've put a larger version of the picture from the linked Duck Works page in the quote, click the pic on the Duck Works page and you'll see the quoted version.

P.S. - All pictures on the linked Duck Works page are clickable for enlargement.

MoeJoe posted about Gilbert & Skippy in post#13 on page#1 of this thread.

Here's an article (sort of translation) from September 12 - 2008, where Gilbert looks for sponsors, that's all I could find on him now.

Could be Gilbert just copied the trophy picture from the original AIT website, so chance is that he doesn't know more than that it exist.

    From the Duck Works page...

Great. You have just volunteered yourself as the governing body for AIT, and the sole arbitrator for interpreting and clarifying the original deed of gift. Thank you, and congratulations. ;)
