Yes, Jaquard looms CAN weave carbon fiber, but only a handful of people know how. Some are even weaving 'pre-preg' carbon fiber. I am supposedly some sort of world expert. Most of this work in in NE UK, where it is almost imposible to get weavers from one side of the Pennines to talk to each other.

However, were I to build a Thames Slipper, I might do one of those sneakeasy's with 'planks' laminated over the side plywood (to give the planked look)', add wood strips to the decks to look like planking, and curve the back down to give a proper Thames Slipper look. Or did I say Thames Slipper Lunch?

This is one of few historical images of a Thames Slipper. Personally I would build a Sneakeasy, and not even try to copy the elegance of the originals. Afterall, owing one of those is a status symbol, and owning a replica just dosn't cut it. Ergo, build a Sneakeasy, bottom of 3/4" ply, sides of 1/4" ply covered with 1/4" planks of wood. Electric power perhaps?

Not terribly status conscious. After all, I'm the guy that has joked that we make fun of folks who behave not entirely unlike the way royalty used to behave; or put another way, if you think a family get together is a good place to look for a bride: you may be a king. ;)

Fantastic, I had read the book again rescently and laughed aloud. I had not known about the film, and again laughed untill I cried.
The antagonism between steam and rowing was alive and well back then too.
The characterization of the other river users was wonderful to.

This 'boat' has been silly and controversial for years now. Pity, 8 tons of hardware materials could have made several perfectly satisfactory boats too.

I for one would go 'off soundings' in a 'hardware store' boat, indeed all my early boats WERE hardware store, the only source for any materials in NZ at the time.

Admitedly i claim to know what i am doing, and would choose suitable woods, and search the 'pile' for straight, no knot, examples. In the PNW, we can buy excellent cedar straight from the forest, not exactly "hardware store' but cheaper too.

There is NO way that boat could weigh 8 ton.

    Think about it.

Bolger estimated the displacement of his Illinois at 15.5 on her lines. To be 8 tons she'd have to be significantly shallower than Illinois' 18" draft. It may be remotely possible ... so is a balanced budget in DC (veeeeerrry remotely possible) ... so I gotta agree with you.

    Colleagues,

Though the issue seems to be displacement, the real issue is weight.

Is it in any way possible to build this boat using the materials mentioned at adequate strength and down to a weight of just 8 tons. Though most of the 'Loose Moose'/'Advanced Sharpie' designs do not have ballast, but rely on hull shape for stability, is this hull shape adequate? Is this particular shape appropriate as it requires somewhat subtle hull design, (L/B, Disp/Beam, etc) and careful weight control whilst operating.

I cannot imagine putting this much money and effort into such a project without careful checks as to the acceptability of the final product.

As to shape. I remind ourselves the poster stated the camera had distorted the hull image, and I therefor assume the hull is 8-10' wide, or possibly more. A 1:5, or 1:6 L/B ratio is by no means unusual in these " touring box's".

I don't recall Goodwilltoall's stated displacement. I thought the 8 tons was what was claimed in the story about the disastermaran, er, catamaran.

And here's something I thought of earlier but didn't mention: in the picture they showed of the catamaran while still intact it was in calm water and yet I couldn't shake the feeling that the bridge deck was bowed down a bit, as if she were so weak she might fold in half just sitting still. If that's not just me seeing something that's not there maybe she could have weighed 8 tons.
