    Most sailors would probably say that what is completely unfair is changing the rules to a major event a matter of weeks before it starts.

    Can you tell us exactly how often this occurred in the past?

    Two boats seem to be sailing fairly safely UNDER THE EARLIER RULES. As so many people have pointed out, the AC is partly a design challenge and if the other two boats are not sailing safely under the rules then they have partly failed the challenge.

    If your low-cost class took off, would you change the rules just before the major event because some people had failed to design and build their boats correctly? If you did, would you understand that the others who had taken the time to design and build the boats right would be annoyed?

    Most of the crew have to grind at some point so crew can't move around as the winches and grinders are fixed. The section profile and size need to be optimised for the required lift and suck. Remember that when flying the rudder elevator pulls down not lifting up. Peter

    It is a sad thing that happened, but a little late for a rule change. It is times like this that I think people should look to good sportsmanship - but who can decide what that is but the sportsmen? It is sad to have this contention after the death of Simspson in any case, and I sure hope that they resolve it in an agreeable manner.

    It would help if an accident report was released indicating that rudder configuration was implicated. Murray needs to display in technical terms and test evidence why the original rules need to be amended. It cannot be done on a whim or on the opinion of 1 design team. After all, this is engineering science.

    It's the rudder's fault, the rules changes and we will race on Optimist class. :p

    Murray/Anzac

    I'm not sure if I am reading this article correctly, but I think that Murray won the ANZAC Regatta. Correct if I'm wrong, but I believe all Gary is saying is that Murray was a good sport when he won in NZ?

    I don't mind a bit of a laugh, and some chiacking in sport - it's healthy IMO -
    but seriously reducing arguments to nationalities is a sign somebody has
    completely slipped their moorings, or a bigot/racist.

    But back on topic, I hope pods of whales enter S.F. harbour (with Greenpeace
    circling to protect them) to make the race more interesting.

    Stephen Barclay speaks: (read the whole article here: http://www.sail-world.com/USA/Gladw...er-will-only-heighten-protest-tensions/111626 )

    America's Cup COO, Stephen Barclay has all but assured that Italy's Luna Rossa will not take part in the opening race of the Louis Vuitton Cup, with a statement calling the Italian's position 'unprincipled'.

    In a statement on the americascup.com website, Barclay decried the position advanced by Max Sirena, the Luna Rossa skipper.

    'We’re extremely disappointed by this,' said America’s Cup Chief Executive Stephen Barclay. 'First and foremost, this is an affront to the fans who’ve been waiting three and half years for the first race.'
    'What everyone will struggle to understand is Sirena saying he’s taking his stance on principle,' added Barclay. 'This is the most unprincipled action I can think of because Luna Rossa’s case is before the Jury. There is no reason not to compete, not to try and put the first score of the regatta on the board.

    'This gesture has no merit, will not get any sympathy and hurts fans, the other teams, their partners and guests, the city of San Francisco and all our stakeholders too,' Barclay continued.

    'I urge Sirena to race. Having the Italian boat on the start line on Sunday is best for everyone, including Luna Rossa.'

    =====
    [Post script/B]: It is now being reported in New Zealand that Luna Rossa skipper Max Sirena has advised Emirates Team New Zealand Grinder/MD Grant Dalton in a phone call that the Italian team will not start tomorrows' race. Emirates Team NZ have issued a statement that they are prepared to race, even if it means sailing the course alone to earn the first points of the Regatta.
    ==================
    I have no patience for Sirenas position. As far as I'm concerned: one down two to go: Go 17ers!

    ---------------------
    Peter, at least on his foilers Bradfield explained to me that at takeoff the mainfoil was designed to support 80% of the load, then , as speed increases the "trailing" rudderfoil would unload until at speed "X" the rudderfoil would begin to pull down automatically. On his boats the main foils(wand controlled) were set up with +2.5 degrees angle of incidence(relative to the static waterline) and the rudder foil at zero degrees AOI(with the same reference).
    This could work the same way on the 72's except for the "manually" controlled nominal angle of incidence of the main foil.

    All the teams appointed Iain Murray. All the teams agreed with every one of the 37 safety recommendations on May 22nd.
    The safety recommendations were prompted by the Artemis crash and the fact that, according to Murray, none of the teams implemented the safety recommendations he made after the Oracle crash.
    So, in his view, this is an an emergency safety implementation that is mandatory this time around. I agree with his assessment 100% and hope he sticks to his position. All the teams are out for whatever they can find to twist to their own purposes. Murrays job is to run this thing with a firm hand in the interest of safety for all concerned.

    except 35 are safety and they have all said they will do these
    2 are being called safety but clearly have performance related implications, thats the argument.

    If there be whales....you can count on the Japanese fleet closely behind. For scientific purposes you understand!! :eek:

    Just a quick question;

    if the 37 recommendations were accepted by all the teams, why does the document linked from the official page state;

    "Important additional notes to be read in conjunction with the recommendations
    (i) These recommendations are made by the Regatta Director after the Review
    Committee interviewed team personnel from all Competitors, and will be refined
    as the further work identified above is completed.
    (ii) The majority of the Regatta Director recommendations represent a consensus
    of the Competitors."

    The document quite clearly says that THE MAJORITY of recommendations represented a CONSENSUS. It does not sat ALL the recommendations, and it does not say that there was unanimity from the competitors on them.

    The document also says that the recs would be refined (WILL be, not COULD be) and therefore there was no final form for any team to give final agreement to

    It is clear on the face of the document that not ALL recs were accepted unanimously, and that they were not final and therefore logically the teams probably couldn't have definitely agreed to them.

    The number of other changes, like dropping the cameraman and VIP, are just more examples of the way this AC has failed to live up to what the organisers themselves said that they would achieve.

    Meanwhile, a vastly bigger sporting event is going on as it does every year, with millions of people like me watching live or on the net or TV as skinny men use highly-restricted gear my mother-in-law could use to ride up hills at 10 knots.

    Two contests, and the one with bleeding edge gear is floundering while the restricted accessible gear is thriving.... so why the hell do so many people in sailing keep promoting the model that is once again failing the sport, instead of the one that works?

    I expect none of those who this posts annoyed will be able to create a logical argument in reply but they will no doubt come up with the normal abuse and hysteria.
