Pending official confirmation, Thomson has set a new 24 hour monohull solo sailing distance record of 536.81 nm.

Its very exciting - Thomson has a lot of work to do in the time remaining. If the high pressure in the bay of Biscay dissolves and the one over Northern Europe fills and moves South to the Netherlands by the morning, as is forecast, he might be able to stay on starboard tack, but its still a big ask now.

Well, it's almost over and Le Cleach will win but Alex really pushed. Tremendous effort for both guys in an awesome race. Congratulations to Armel
    for first place!

Can't help but be disappointed for Thomson- not so much that he didn't win, but that the autopilot troubles at the last critical moment exhausted him through lack of sleep. It seemed that he made the last tack early, certainly compared to Le Cleach, and perhaps then had lighter winds. If he'd been able to continue creeping up on Le Cleach through that last tack, it would have been such a spectacular end to the race, no matter who actually crossed the line first.

I've been totally impressed with Thomson's relaxed, professional, approachable demeanour throughout the race.
