TV opportunity for custom boat builders...

I'm not sure anyone builds crazy boats as a routine, but someone with money and a crazy idea comes along and asks a boat builder if he can do it. It's not the ability to do it, as pretty much everyone can build things, it's that they are wastes of time and money so nobody does build one until some eccentric pays them to.

While documenting unique, crazy, awesome and bizarre boat builds might draw in viewers who may otherwise not be interested in how boats are actually built, it probably won't show anyone how boats are actually built.

To get something to float and be able to put a motor on it is not hard.

I think you could do a series as quickly as you put all that together.

I think he is looking for a series of shows.

We will, I MEAN WILL, replace duck dumbnasty!

We will get them Hollywood types to dress us up with wigs and fake beards .... and sell little fancy dolls.



And model boats, especially the model table boats .... and the banana boat, and of course, the yellow submarine.

Thanks for your response... It's totally fair to be skeptical. I make this stuff, and I know i am! The truth is that this project will be similar to stuff you see on Nat Geo and/or Discovery. There will be a lot of good PROCESS to the show, depicting how and why things work or don't work - but big personalities certainly help.

the combo motorcycle/PWC is a real possibility as is a motorcycle 'tire planing' concept by a poster named "Yipster".

another real possibility is the modular cat concept....my goal would be to have it towable with a standard Ford F-250/350 or similar and be able to also carry the tow truck and thus arrive on distant shore and become a towed boat once again.

 

I lived in Chino and met many aspiring 'actors.'

Yes, I can guess how much the guys with the fake beards, and hippie hair weaved in, and brand new camouflage (advertising) outfits earn ....

And I a still wish the rest of US got that kind of money.

So, let's do this gig, bigger, better, with more surfboard action, more duck boat action, and of course some wild action.

I have built some unsual boats, but I do not make a living that way. These were just for some fun contests here in the Seattle area.

This one is named "Puff", with an experimental twin modified junk rig sails.

 

I had to ask. I was not sure what you were after based on your example. It looked to me like you might be looking for nutty 'look at me' guys and the board was giving you serious professionals. I honestly just wanted to help either way but Discovery doing shows on innovative boat building is a dream come true for me. I will be your biggest fan and viral marketer. If there is anything I can do to help get the show going let me know. I may have something to contribute yet.

FYI Morrelli & Melvin is a (the) top notch multihull outfit right in your backyard -Newport Beach. M&M have been involved in lots of great programs and could set you up with the builders.

They are very busy with the AC72 at the moment but may be available soon. I may have sounded snarky suggesting the AC but they might be interested. Did you know they are actually paying for their AC coverage? And Stan Honey did an amazing job with the graphics so you can understand the race.

Tom Spears is another great nominee for aerodynamics -I try to follow everything he posts on this board. He makes very complex science understandable.

I am not angling for any publicity, my life is complicated and full enough as it is now. But I have built something like 19 or 20 small boats, mostly from recycled or salvaged materials, most cost well under $100 to build, using simple hand tools. It is just as much a creative challenge to make use of low cost and available materials as anything else. I do not think boats need to cost very much to get lots of enjoyment from them.

here is a picture of a small trimaran sailboat we built in about 9 hours, that used an all natural composite skin of cardboard, cotton fabric and casein based glue.
