transom frame question

    Hello, I'm building a Hal Kelly madcap runabout. I'm done with all the frames except transom. The plans call for lap joints on the transom, but I'm having troube making accurate tight fitting lap joints given the odd angle the partsee meet up. If I used butt joints with a gusset plate on one side and the transom plywood on the other would I be loosing any strength?
    My Glenn Witt book for plywood boat building seems to prefer the gusseted joint over any other method...

    A gusset joint should be OK. It should actually be stronger than just a lap.
