** Class 40 : Crédit Mutuel shows clearly more average speed / its closer followers in these ~ 135° twa conditions, they did 20NM more during the last 24h, they are now 28 NM ahead. It is another demonstration of the scow advantage despite the rule restriction which forces the designer David Raison to make a higher sacrifice on the floatation lenght. But that parameter becomes of low importance when the planning mode is triggered. One can regret that there is no "scow bow " tentative design in the Imoca Class , even despite the current rule restriction, for a comparison with the foilers.
** Imoca : Charal has built a bit more lead , now more than 50 NM on Apivia and 11th Hour (the ex Hugo Boss) which shows a consistent high speed and took advantage of its west position. The non foilers are less at their advantage as expected, as we are no longer on a rear wind configuration. Arkea Paprec at last takes advantage of its unique foil during this long port tack to come back to the 6th position, but perhaps a bit to East to round by the west the high Sao Antao island. Maître Coq and Advens for cybersecurity showed also very high speed during the last 24h, Advens (the Verdier design originally for the new VOR formula) did one 24 Knots average per hour.

As with all such collisions,I have to wish the sailors well with their voyage to a safe harbour. It can't be easy after a really big effort, on top of operating at racing efficiency for a week, and then needing to remain totally alert for the careful sailing that will be necessary.I would be very curious about the nature of the object in the water. Was it a log, a length of fishing net, a whale or a shipping container? None of the reports I have seen have mentioned whether there was a bang or if the boat just slowed abruptly.

I had the chance to take a look at 11th Hour Racing from the ground in September and as can be seen, the combination of considerable draft and a narrow chord inevitable exerts a huge load on the keel pivot mechanism.Judging by the performance of the boat in the last few days, they did a good job on a boat that was already fast. 11th hour racing.JPG

Cybersecurity (Advens) has posted 521 miles in 24 hours. That is getting close to the IMOCA 24 hour record set by the old Hugo Boss. And if I have the tracker puzzled out correctly, those are VMG miles. The point-to-point mileage would be a bit higher.

Yes Phil, Advens shows an impressive average speed potential.
Alex and his team finally have decided to drop the keel, too hasardons for the hull structure. They filled the water ballasts and out their foils so that to have a maximum of stability and get a chance to reach the Canaries at low speed. Jean-Pierre Dick succeeded in such sailing without keel to finish a Vendée Globe.

They need to drop those guys a ballast bladder that they can fill with 3-4 tons of sea water. Or use bilge pump to fill the air chambers of their liferaft with sea water?? Okay, maybe not the first option to consider.

** Class 40 : Credit Mutuel /Ian Lipinsky & Adrien Hardy put another extra 0ne knot / 24 NM per day on its direct followers, now leading by 48NM /the second Leyton / Fabien Delahaye & Sam Goodchild. Ian Lipinsky is the well known winner of the last Mini Transat with his scow Maximum now sailed by Francois Jamboux in the current Mini-Transat ( 2nd leg on going). Adrien Hardy is also a well known sailor in La solitaire du Figaro, 2nd last year and 7th this year, and the expert commited by the insurance for the recovery of capsized sailing boats when possible.
** Imoca : Here we are, at the entry of the Doldrums, with its part of hazard, of chance. So nothing is done for the final ranks , some are doing a counter tacks to aim what they judge the right door. 2 chasing groups behind Charal : 11th Hour, Apivia, PRB and Banque Populaire, at 100 to 170 NM behind, and another 6 from Initiatives Cœur to Advens, at 240 to 280 NM behind. To note again the impressive come back of Advens / Thomas Ruyant & Antoine Koch, the faster boat of the fleet since the last 2-3 days.

** Class 40, I just translate this morning comment from the race web site
"Class40: the 24h record falls, 408.80 miles traveled in 24 hours at an average speed of 17 knots, Crédit Mutuel, this boat signed by the architect David Raison, keeps all its promises. With its funny round and spatulated bow, the red and white boat displays an incredible ability to swallow the miles in strong wind and on the formed sea, under autopilot, without wetting the crew (or almost) and within a stability to pale the Class40 of the previous generation which did not exceed the average of 15.70 knots over 24 hours. "The boat, it advances alone, we found the right sails, we monitor the boat but it advances alone. We are under medium spinnaker with 1 reef and 2 reefs in the mainsail. We move on all fours, it moves a lot, we try not to hurt ourselves. It's a bit wet on the bridge but I think it has nothing to do with the back pals, "said Ian Lipinski early this morning, in the standby at the chart table. Across the Cape Verde Islands, Crédit Mutuel leads Class40 72 miles ahead of Leyton and Aïna Enfance & Enfance."
    >>> when does an equivalent design for Imoca ? would be interesting to compare with foilers (and they are a lot cheaper).
** Imoca : the Doldrums are going to redistribute the ranks. Charal is presently glued in a no wind zone while Apivia, now the leader by 5iits East is still at double digits speed, seems guided by the track of the third Multi 50 just ahead. Followers split in two groups East and West of Charal, who will emerge from this lottery ?

Lottery indeed. As of this writing, there are six IMOCA between 128 and 136 miles from the lead. Three are 75 miles east of the rhumb, and three 75 miles to the west of the rhumb.

Imoca : Doldrums have decided to be unfair this year ! that's really cruel for Charal, still more or less glued with a low average speed, now distanced by 130 NM by Apivia which in its East never have significant stops and is already catching the south trade winds. And moreover, Charal is joined by 12 followers more or less on the same line, of which some also better positioned in its East and already in > 10 Knots speeds (PRB, Banque Pop, 11th Hour, Advens, Arkea-Paprec, Newrest Art et Fenêtres). The final rush downwind to Bahia will be sporty and competitive for sure.

Class 40 : the first 3 lead by Crédit Mutuel just enter the Doldrums zone and already face no wind patches..., no other solution than to make South by taking advantage of each stormy wind under the clouds and to cross the fingers.
Imoca : Apivia made a huge lead of 220 NM on the others, they have now a certain win in their hands if no accident. Charal had another terrible 24 h at low speed, Jérémie and Christopher should be physically and mentally exhausted by this endless battle, they are now 5th and not well positioned in the west of other 8 boats on about the same line. The competition for the second place in the final rush should be spectacular, inc. from Arkea-Paprec which will be on its good tack to use its unique foil.

** Class 40 : in the Doldrums for the leaders, but that seems less terrible than it was for the Imoca, Crédit Mutuel can maintained an honorable speed of 6-8 Knots and a confortable lead of 50 NM on the second Leyton. Adrien Hardy, from Crédit Mutuel, reported that they have now a regular East wind, after the usual stop and go they faced previously.
** Imoca : Apivia, with 288 NM to go and 226 NM of lead / chasing group, is very confortable to secure a win. Behind, a hard competition in ~ beam reaching conditions for the podium places, between PRB 2nd , Charal 3rd which pushed hard, the non foiler Banque Pop 4th but with a speed deficit of 3-4 Knots in these conditions, 11th Hour and Advens for Cybersecurity. The opportunity to see the speed average and peak potential in these optimal conditions for the foilers. Presently Charal is the faster, with an average 21 Knots during the last hour.

136 NM to go for Apivia, an arrival expected in the night. Behind, Charal is still chasing hard to take a deserved second place, but that means going 1,5 knots more in average / PRB for the last 20h of race, not evident because during the last 24 h it was just 1,1 knots more (18,8 /17,7). Advens still impressive, another a well born Verdier design and an excellent skipper Thomas Ruyant. Arkea Paprec cannot show the same speed as previously (before the Doldrums) and as its close neighbours Initiatives Cœur and Newrest, (14,9 / 16,3 and 17,6) , despite being on the right tack to use their foil, a technical problem ?
