A sailing boat in broad daylight with skipper on deck. In collision with a cargo ship.

Presumably the latter was in the wrong under collision regs.

But why no radar or AIS alarm on either vessel? And why no panicky 5 hoots from the ship (or was there no one on watch as it was good vis?)

There were 25 starters in the following classes only 40ft mono, 60ft mono, 50ft multi, up to 100ft multi. Plus Pen Duick 2

There is still the Jester Challenge race for those who don't meet those rules, also held every 4 years alternating with an Azores race (I think)

    Transat

    From Scuttlebutt tonight:

At around 1900hrs GMT+2, Erwan Le Roux, the skipper of FenêtréA Cardinal, sustained substantial damage to the port float on his Multi50 trimaran. Erwan was leading the Multi50 fleet when the incident occurred, sailing downwind in a northeasterly 25-27 knots, and was approximately sixty miles off Cape Finisterre. He managed to secure his boat and is now in regular contact with his weather man to find the best landing point between Portugal and Spain, and is sailing at a reduced speed on a heading of 135°.

    Corley epoxy coated

It's a shame, all these Multi50's breaking floats maybe they do need to go to a monotype. Having said that that FenetreA Cardinal has been thrashed all over the place for years, could be a fatigue failure.

Maybe the 50s need foils to lift their hardworked floats out?

Well there was some mention of that by the Multi50 president which is none other than Erwan Le Roux. Minimum weight, monotype, minimum float volumes and lifting foils were up for discussion. I haven't heard the final wash up of that discussion though.

MAINSAIL DAMAGE, LIMIT FOR SÉBASTIEN JOSSE AND MONO60 EDMOND DE ROTHSCHILD
THE TRANSAT BAKERLY MONO60 EDMOND DE ROTHSCHILD SÉBASTIEN JOSSE

This Wednesday, May 4, shortly after midnight, while sailing off Cape Finisterre in 25-30 knots of north-easterly sea in a handy, Sébastien Josse was a violent jibe following a bar hook. In the maneuver, the mainsail - mainsail and true engine of 160m2 - was seriously damaged and is now inoperable. Damage that pose no immediate threat to the marine and structure of 60 feet, yet condemn all performance and therefore interest across the Atlantic in the race. Therefore in consultation with shipowners - Ariane and Benjamin de Rothschild - and his technical team, Sébastien Josse decided to abandon the Transat bakerly and sail to the Spanish coast and specifically Vigo in Galicia, where it will quickly joined by members of the Gitana Team.

This may well be the last photo ever taken of the complete port outrigger
