    Hello,

Pirate again with more 10 foot circumnavigation madness.

Started designing my hull for real and will start building it as soon as she's designed to perfection.

I am taking the keep it simple approach.

I need a bulletproof 10 foot hull that can provide enough space for 100 days worth of provisions plus me.

My first hull is inspired by phil bolgers approach, using simple ply board with nothing fancy. Its a brick like the micro without the flat bottom.

    Is it too tall?

That blue thing is a 6 foot guy my size.

It will have a lead ballast keel.

What are the downsides to having straight, box like vertical chines?

I have been reading all the rantings and ravings and what could be construed as negative

stonedpirate your complete lack of understanding of the subject matter and your complete lack of sailing experience screams out loudly that you dont have a clue what going on

please take this as a positive step to actually help you

So whats wrong with my hull?

Am making a balsa model of it.

I think with 10 foot hulls, shape is largely irrelevent.

They are essentially bathtubs and boauncy, strength and space is the name of the game.

A simple hull like this will probably work.

Ironically, i got the idea for it from the around in ten guys in the first place.

    Here is bolgers micro.

The responses i hear about it are that it is ugly but sails surprisingly well.

The only complaint is that its flat bottom creates a rough ride so i added a v and she's good to go :p

This looks like the simplest hull out, gives heaps of space, easy to build and if it sails half way decent i'm building it.

Manie knows his stuff when it comes to small boats and Bolgers are sharpies are they not
    flat bottoms
if you change it to a v its sailing characteristics are completely different

    just a thought
if you loose the desire for a record you could easily realize this plan and be a lot more comfortable in the process

Screw sailing around my local neighborhood in the ugliest cheapest looking ply box on the water :p

If i just wanted to mess about in my protected waters i would just buy a trailer sailor and be done with it.

    Going bluewater :)

As for changing its sailing characteristics, i will see how the model performs.

WHo knows, this could be the latest thing in hull design :p haha

SP what displacement and draft are you aiming for you don’t show a waterline or is the xyz where its at.

    Pretty much.

Fully loaded i'm looking at between 500-600kg including the weight of the boat itself.

    LOA and LWL is 10ft.

I like crazy ideas. Here is a sketch of the idea I have mentioned in the other thread:
A kite powered upside-down simmetric planing hull.
It is just a rough estimate of overall shape: I guess the keels should be more pronounced and the area between them more flatter.

SP what is the waterline beam and the draft. That dead rise could be a bit much for your weight estimate.

Interesting kite idea. The same thing was tried on the around in ten forum. he built it but said it didnt work as well as he hoped. Think it was the flying bear or floating bear.

Waterline beam is 1.52meters. Draft depends on how long i make the keel. 85cm to the base of the hull. So probably 1.2meters.

SP with those dimensions , dead rise and waterline placement, I think your displacement of the hull design is a little higher than your estimate.

Maybe. the V alone is 0.6m^3

I will see what the volume of the main section is.
