Restoring my 17' Canoe

I think she's ready for the water...

 

It looks very nice, brand new like!

The only thing that disagrees to me is where the woven roving laps are and those 1/2 " long 'threads' waiting to shred cloth and skin etc. If they aren't loose now, it wouldn't take much to break them loose and then they're like the best thing around for a splinter that will take months to go away.

If you ever use it in a rough river where it might tip over, get full of water and then be pulled downstream by the current, filling it with flotation bags is a good idea so it won't get wrapped around rocks or trees and destroyed. It's also a good idea to practice how to get back in it from the water, as it's not that easy to do.

It looks real good though.

 

Remove the watco. Watco is really superb for repairable interior surfaces, but has no UV protection and doesn't do great against water.

I recommend epifanes wood finish/ uv gloss. Fast build, you can recoat it after about 8-12 hours and if you put 3 coats on, sand and a final; it'll look great.

Trying to smooth out the inside is a waste of time. You *need* it textured for walking etc, Most FG boat builders splash the paint on, and then "splatter" the inside with a contrasting colour. Google "splatter paint boat interiors" for examples
